• Former inmate praises decision to give inmates tablets

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An ex-convict is applauding the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision’s decision to give tablets to each inmate.
    The tablets are not being paid for by taxpayers. Instead, they will be provided by the contractor, a company called JPay.
    Patrick Vail, the former inmate, now owns his own business. He says having a tablet when he was behind bars could have taught him even more.

    ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) – New York State will end its successful “I Love NY” campaign, the state DOT announced Friday.
    The announcement comes after the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration sent a letter Thursday to New York transportation officials saying the state stands to lose $14 million in federal funding for failing to remove the 500-plus “I Love NY” signs.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Grades are in, and the Buffalo River is no where near the top of the class. In fact, it’s closer to failing.
    Numbers from the DEC show the Buffalo River ranks as the fifth unhealthiest waterway in the state.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — It can be tough for officers to place handcuffs on a juvenile and take them into police custody, according to Captain Jeff Rinaldo. He says it makes officers think about their own family members. And now, all around Erie County, fewer juveniles are finding themselves wrapped up in the system.

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — The University at Buffalo is seeing a decrease in the number of international students enrolled at the school.
    “It’s really sad to me,” said Sarah Pastore, a University at Buffalo sophomore.  “We always do this thing the first week where we say where we’re from and I am noticing more people from Buffalo and around the state but not India or even China.”

    (CNN)  – Wall Street is having its worst day of the Trump presidency.
    The Dow dropped 600 points, or 2.3%, on Friday despite a strong jobs report that showed wage growth is finally starting to pick up. That’s great news for workers, but it reinforced investors’ concern about inflation and the bond market.

  • Buffalo police investigating apparent hit-and-run

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police in Buffalo are investigating an apparent hit-and-run incident from Thursday night.
    Around 11:20 p.m., authorities say a female was struck while standing in a driveway on the 100 block of Dunlop Ave. She was pinned under a parked car, investigators say.
    After the victim was struck, police say the driver then hit a house before fleeing the scene in the vehicle.

    SALAMANCA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Salamanca City Central School District says one of its district administrators has been placed on leave following allegations relating to conduct.
    Superintendent Robert Breidenstein says the school is “working with counsel and law enforcement, who are investigating these allegations.”

  • Buffalo school district plans to cut teaching jobs at City Honors

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo Public Schools plans to cut 5.5 teaching positions at City Honors to save money.
    The teachers’ union says this is payback because the teachers refused to take on extra work.
    The Buffalo Teachers Federation made an agreement with the school district in 1999. The deal meant teachers would not have to perform non-teaching duties.

  • Buffalo man admits to raping child

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 29-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to raping a child.
    This past October, prosecutors say that Robert Proctor had sex with a girl who was younger than 13 while at a residence in the city.
    The child immediately reported the incident after it happened. Proctor’s DNA was found on her body, prosecutors say.
    He pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree rape. When sentenced, Proctor could spend up to 25 years in prison.

    HONOLULU (AP) — A woman accused of deliberately driving off a Hawaii cliff and killing her identical twin sister was acquitted of murder Thursday.
    Second Circuit Judge Peter Cahill found Alexandria Duval not guilty after a trial that started Monday. Duval opted to have a judge instead of a jury decide the case.

    HINSDALE, N.Y. (WIVB) — On Thursday, a fire broke out at a Town of Hinsdale Highway Department building.
    The building and a dump truck were destroyed in the fire, according to officials at the scene.
    “If you look at the building, you can see it’s very well compromised,” Hinsdale Fire Chief Kelly Karst said.
    Officials say another truck, multiple tractors and other pieces of equipment were also damaged in the fire.
