Nigeria finally did the painful thing everyone said that it had to do.
On June 20, it unpegged its currency, the naira, from the US dollar and promised to pursue a flexible exchange-rate system. And what happens next begins the story of why countries tie their currencies together and what can go wrong.
The naira fell by about 30% against the dollar in a single day.
And then inflation surged to its highest level in over a decade.
Nigeria has plenty of examples of ho

Hedge fund managers are waiting for the world to change
Hedge fund managers seem to be waiting for the world to change.
It's well known at this point that these funds are having a tough time of it. They've returned about 3% this year on average, according to Goldman Sachs, while the S&P 500 is up by about 7%.
The hedge funds themselves have had a plethora of excuses for this poor performance, including the complaint that market conditions are making it much harder for them to eke out a return.Their response: making concentrate -
A major weather pattern is about to dominate global currency markets
One of the biggest drivers of Asian currencies in the coming months could be the weather.
In a note out Wednesday, strategists at Deutsche Bank examined how the climate pattern La Niña could affect Asian economies, and how a pass-through effect from the weather could ease a jump in inflation and eventually weaken currencies.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed that La Niña is coming. It will follow a record-setting El Niño, which is marked by un -
19 cities where first-time homebuyers can live large
Buying your first home can be hard.
You have to take out a loan, find a quiet neighborhood, and get a home near good schools and shopping. The list goes on for what seems like forever.
But no matter how long your list is, living space is probably close to the top.
After all, 43% of Americans told Trulia.com they would like a larger home. So if that's true for you, where should you move to in order to get the best value for your money?
Things apparently are bigger in Texas, so start the -
The Fed's biggest conference of the year kicks off on Thursday — here's what to expect
The biggest monetary-policy conference of the year, the annual Jackson Hole Symposium, is set to take place at the end of this week.
For central-bank enthusiasts, this is like the Olympics. Or something like that. At any rate, this is a big deal.
The topic of this year's conference — which runs August 25-27 — is "Designing Resilient Monetary Policy Frameworks for the Future."
In layman's terms, speakers will confront the future of institutions like the Fed in light of pas -
A top Wall Street strategist explains why everything about markets seems broken right now
"The market is broken."
This sentiment has become more or less the received wisdom in the investing world over the last several years.
Nearly a decade of crisis-era monetary policy, coupled with political inaction across the developed markets, has led to underwhelming economic performance the world over.
Mohamed El-Erian's book, "The Only Game In Town," published earlier this year, cleanly captured the thinking that obviously, something in markets and central-bank policy isn't working.
And yet a -
The new 'Ben-Hur' has the most dismal box office opening of any blockbuster this summer
It looks like that faith-based audience, which in the past has brought profits to many Christian-focused titles over the years (or at least made them break even), did not come through for Paramount's $100-million-budgeted retelling of "Ben-Hur."
The swords-and-sandals epic that follows a Jewish prince's journey for revenge (and in this rendition of the Lew Wallace novel, with much larger Jesus subplot), took in a measly $11.4 million, according to Variety.
For comparison, Paramount's last religi -
So you want to be a Wall Street banker? Here's how much you'll get paid
If you've ever thought about a career in finance, you may want to know what you could earn down the road.
To answer your questions, we reached out to Emolument, a salary-benchmarking website.
They gathered data on 2,800 finance professionals in New York at the analyst, associate, vice-president, director, and managing-director levels. You'll notice that the bonuses grow exponentially from analyst to managing director. The MD bonuses are actually larger, on average, than salaries.

TARGET: People aren't buying Apple products (TGT, AAPL)
Target struggled to sell electronics in the second quarter, especially Apple products.
The retailer on Wednesday reported earnings that were stronger than expected. But it lowered its outlook for the rest of the year as it plans for a "challenging environment," according to CEO Brian Cornell.
There was "meaningful pressure in electronics" during the second quarter, and a decline erased 70 basis points from overall sales at stores open for at least one year, he said.
"Notably, about a third of th -
Macy’s decision to close a bunch of stores could spell trouble for billions of dollars of loans
Sluggish sales at Macy's are hurting more than just the mega-retailer itself.
The department store chain recently announced that it would be closing 100 stores in a bid to shore up business. That could impact about $3.64 billion in commercial mortgage-backed securities debt, according to a report by Morningstar Credit Ratings' Steve Jellinek and his team.
More of Macy's locations are expected to shutter, Morningstar said, citing below-average sal -
China got it right
Remember what happened a year ago?
China shocked financial markets with a sudden devaluation of the renminbi, cutting it by 3% against the dollar over the course of five trading days.
That helped drive a $4 trillion market rout, with global stock indexes dropping by 10% in the aftermath.
The devaluation was widely seen as a sign that the Chinese economy was in a much worse state than anyone had previously believed.
"It was not the currency move per se that concerned market participants, but rath -
There's one simple reason why we're heading for a tech IPO liftoff
2016 has been a particularly slow year for initial public offerings, especially in the technology sector.
The first quarter was the worst for IPOs since the depths of the financial crisis. And while things have picked up since then, the deals have all been smaller ones, barely breaking the $1 billion mark.
In tech, for example, the largest IPO of the year — that of the messaging app Line — raised $1.14 billion in July, though much of that came from investors in Tokyo.
But there's an -
Obamacare has gone from the president's greatest achievement to a 'slow-motion death spiral'
It has not been a good week for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare.
A slew of news, from insurers dropping out to possible fraud among healthcare providers, has all accumulated in a deluge of negative headlines for one of President Obama's signature laws.
In fact, it's gotten so bad that it appears that the whole program itself may be in doubt.
While there are issues, and this past week highlighted many of them, it does appear that there is a long road ahead before we -
