    MODESTO, Calif. (CBS/AP) — Police say a homeless woman sleeping in a cardboard box was struck and killed by heavy machinery operated by a road crew clearing a homeless camp.
    According to reports, 33-year-old Shannon Marie Bigley was killed August 1 in a grassy field alongside a highway where a homeless camp was built.
    Modesto police say the incident occurred while a Caltrans crew was attempting to clear the encampment. Details on the machinery were not disclosed.

    SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – A Los Banos woman is facing several charges after a deadly crash early Monday morning.
    The scene was on southbound Interstate 5 near Lambert Road, south of Elk Grove.
    California Highway Patrol says, a little after 2:30 a.m., a woman driving an SUV struck a trailer being towed by a van. The van then swung out of control and overturned, ejecting many of the van’s passengers.

    SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A spike strip left behind in the #3 lane of westbound Interstate 80 at the Norwood exit caused a number of cars to blow tires early this morning.

    SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – There is light at the end of the tunnel for drivers tired of paying high gas prices.
    A gallon of gas is up nearly fifty cents on average compared to this time last year. But, experts believe driving is about to get cheaper – about 13 cents a gallon cheaper in the coming weeks.
    Typically, in the fall, demand for gas goes down after people are done taking summer road trips.
    Refineries are able to switch to a winter blend in September which is cheaper to produce.

  • Man Dead After Shooting In South Natomas

    SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A man was shot and killed in South Natomas Tuesday night, police say.
    The scene was along the 1300 block of Tumbleweed Way, off San Juan Road. Sacramento police say officers responded to the scene just after 9 p.m. to investigate a reported shooting.
    A man who had suffered at least one gunshot wound was soon found by officers. CPR was started on the man, but medics later pronounced him dead at the scene.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will become the first state to eliminate bail for suspects awaiting trial and replace it with a still murky risk-assessment system under a bill signed Tuesday by Gov. Jerry Brown.
