    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A year ago, in January of 2017, Niagara’s Derian Plouffe was an observer in the stands, unable to lace up his skates and hit the ice.

  • Lovejoy shooting leaves man in critical condition

    Buffalo, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 32-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting on East Lovejoy Street early Saturday morning.
    Police say the man was shot outside Checkmate Bar and Grill following a fight that began inside the bar.
    The man was taken to ECMC. There are no suspects in custody at this time.

  • Buffalo Zoo will get new reptile, amphibian house

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Reptiles will now be better represented at the Buffalo Zoo, thanks to state funding for a new Amphibian and Reptile Center.
    On Friday the zoo announced the funding and the new center.
    The exhibit is new, but the building it is housed in is not. It was built more than 75 years ago- and the new money will help bring it up to date.

    Legislator Lynne Dixon is looking to create a law that would ban the use of public money in harassment settlements- but the Democratic majority has so far put that plan on hold.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Private college leaders across the state are doubting Governor Andrew Cuomo’s commitment to higher education.
    The governor is proposing eliminating a program that provides more than $30 million in state aid to private colleges and universities.

  • WW2 vet honored for helping liberate thousands from Germany concentration camp

    KENMORE, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Western New York veteran was honored Friday for his actions during World War II.
    The late Howard Michael Ehrnhardt helped liberate more than 32,000 men, women and children at the Dachau Concentration camp.
    Dachau was Hitler’s first and longest run concentration camp in Germany. The camp held more then 188,000 prisoners and was responsible for at least 28,000 deaths, but likely more.
    Ehrnhardt was one of the first to arrive at the camp in 1945.
