  • Veterans react to VA decision to temporarily shutdown operating rooms

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A local veteran is reacting tonight to the Buffalo VA Medical Center’s decision to temporarily shut down its operating rooms.
    The move happened yesterday after the VA found some equipment was discolored.
    There is still no word the operating room is back open. This isn’t the first time sterilization concerns have come up .

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) – Water pressure for some people in Niagara Falls still isn’t back up to 100%. There’s more work to be done on the water system, after a major water main break was repaired last week. That line broke on December 15th.

  • Juvenile pedestrian struck on Military Road

    TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Military Road was closed from Sheridan Drive to School Street Wednesday for an accident involving a juvenile pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
    The juvenile was transported to Oishei Children’s Hospital with a possible head injury.
    The driver of the vehicle showed no signs of intoxication, police said.
    The Town of Tonawanda Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Buffalo native Troi Michael enlisted in the Marines in 1987. They served in Okinawa, Japan.
    “To the underprivileged and disenfranchised the military isn’t a curse, it’s a blessing,” Troi told News 4.

  • Medical examiner IDs remains of boy, 4, found in bag in yard

    CLEVELAND (AP) — A medical examiner has identified the remains found in a bag in the backyard of a vacant Cleveland home last year as those of a 4-year-old boy.
    Cleveland.com reports authorities said Wednesday that no one had reported Eliazar Ruiz missing. No criminal charges have been filed in his death. Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Medical Examiner Thomas Gilson hasn’t released a cause of death, but previously said the death appears “extremely suspicious.&
  • Town of Tonawanda having problems sending tax bills

    TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Town of Tonawanda has been having issues sending out tax bills.
    A message from Town Clerk Marguerite Greco was posted to Facebook, saying “The Town Clerk’s Office has had an unusual amount of tax bills returned undeliverable.”
    The addresses were determined to be correct, but the town has been in contact with the U.S. Post Office to try and fix the issue.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police in Buffalo have made an arrest related to two recent bank robberies.
    Authorities say that on Monday, a bank robbery occurred on the 1300 block of Jefferson Ave. The next day, police responded to another bank robbery, but that one was on the 700 block of Tonawanda St.
    Police took a suspect into custody on Tuesday night. He was identified as 28-year-old Erie, Pennsylvania resident Billy Evans.

    MICHIGAN (AP) — A Michigan sports doctor has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting gymnasts and other young women and girls, capping a remarkable seven-day hearing that brought more than 150 victims or their families to court, including Olympians.

    A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Remus Nowak.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks is giving its U.S. workers pay raises and stock grants this year, citing recent changes to the tax law.
    All employees will soon be able to earn paid sick time off, and the company’s parental leave benefits will include all non-birth parents.   • Survey: More Americans open to riding in self-driving cars

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A new study from AAA says more Americans are willing to ride in autonomous vehicles.
    According to an annual survey, 63 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in them. Early last year, that number was 78 percent.

  • American Red Cross in need of donors after series of cancellations

    (WIVB) — The American Red Cross says there is an urgent need for blood donors after a number of cancellations.
    The cancellations stemmed from cases of the flu and severe winter weather conditions.
    According to the Red Cross, more than 16,500 blood and platelet donations went uncollected this month.

    (WIVB) — When was the last time you washed your winter coat, gloves or scarf?
    A new study by researchers at the University of Arizona recommends cleaning those winter staples once a week.
    The study says your gloves are a hotbed for germs, especially if your morning commute includes public spaces.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police want to know what caused a driver to crash into a downtown construction site.
    It happened Tuesday, just after 11:30 p.m. at the corner of S. Elmwood Ave. and Huron St. It does not appear that anyone was seriously hurt.

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Toys “R” Us has released a list of stores it plans to close.
    One western New York location is on the list, which was filed in bankruptcy court in Virginia.
    The document lists about 180 Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us and outlets the company has targeted for shutdown.
    The Babies “R” Us store on Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst is among them.
    The company says closing sales should begin by mid-February and wrap up by mid-April.

    The Illinois Democrat says she will give birth to her second daughter this spring. It will make her the first U.S. senator to give birth while in office.

    ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) – Thousands of Erie County residents are without power Tuesday night, mainly in Clarence, Cheektowaga, and Elma.
    At one point, 10,000 people were without power.
    By around 11 p.m., the number of outages was down to about 2,800, mostly in Cheektowaga.A NYSEG spokesperson said that the outages are due to wires down because of high winds. People are cautioned to stay away from downed wires.

    David Reyes told police that his 11 year-old son was coming out of a store around 4 or 4:30 p.m. Monday when four juvenile suspects assaulted him.

  • Out-of-control school bus slides down icy street, hits car in Massachusetts

    SUTTON, Mass. — Frightening video shows an out-of-control school bus sliding down an icy hill Tuesday morning, CBS Boston reports. Cheryl Kearney Katz shared video to Facebook of the bus sliding down Peach Tree Drive at about 7:10 a.m. local time.
    It spins around and takes out mailboxes before crashing into a car that also appeared to have spun out.
