• Suspected robber holding hostages inside Detroit bank

    CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Police in suburban Detroit say they’re negotiating with a man holding hostages inside a bank following a failed robbery.
    Canton Township police spokeswoman Barb Caruso tells the Detroit Free Press that an undisclosed number of hostages are inside a Citizens Bank branch.
    Police have the bank surrounded and say the man has barricaded himself inside. Caruso says a special operations team is negotiating with the suspect.

    CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 45-year-old Canandaigua man has been charged by criminal complaint with receiving, possessing, and distributing child pornography.
    Eric P. Laube faces a minimum of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

    Nicholas Harms, 31, was initially facing seven charges. The grand jury returned an indictment of felony burglary and criminal possession of stolen property.

  • Pressure turned back on at site of Niagara Falls water main break

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Water pressure has been turned back on at the site of a water main break on 47th St. in Niagara Falls, the city’s water board says.
    The break occurred on Dec. 15 and has caused problems for residents.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Cheektowaga man has pleaded guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
    Prosecutors say that Paul Hintermeier, 37, was driving drunk on Richard Dr. in Cheektowaga, when he ran a stop sign and hit a bicyclist while turning onto Shanley St.

    According to officials, the trailer was loaded with hazardous materials.

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — In a report looking at the first halves of 2016 and 2017, various types of crime reports in the Town of Amherst increased last year.
    The FBI released their Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report data for this past year. The list adds up offenses reported to law enforcement officers in certain communities.

  • Governor Cuomo proposes hospitals store rape kits for more than 30 days

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — It’s a new effort to help protect rape victims — keeping rape kits in storage longer. New legislation by Governor Andrew Cuomo would change the amount of time hospitals keep the kits.

  • Surgical procedures at Buffalo VA Hospital resume

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Surgical procedures at the Buffalo VA Hospital have resumed following an investigation into discoloration found in sterilization packages.
    “The discoloration was attributed to natural elements found in the water used in the sterilization process and poses no risk to our patients,” a statement from the VA said Wednesday.
    All previously cancelled procedures are being rescheduled.
