• Meet Moose, Stanislaus Co. Sheriff’s New Jail Patrol K9

  MODESTO (CBS13) – There’s a new duo on the force in Stanislaus County.
  A 17-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, Deputy De Los Santos is teaming up with three-year-old K9 “Moose” to be the first unit to work inside jail facilities.
  Moose’s job will be to sniff out any contraband brought into the jail – like tobacco and drugs like marijuana, heroin and crystal meth.
  Moose can even sniff out cell phones.

• PG&E Warning Elk Grove Residents About Natural Gas Venting

  ELK GROVE (CBS13) – PG&E is making sure Elk Grove residents know that crews will be venting natural gas on Friday afternoon.
  The gas is being vented from a section of pipe being worked on near Elk Grove and East Stockton boulevards as part of a maintenance project.
  Officials say the smell of natural gas, as well as the sound of it venting, may be noticed by residents during this operation.
  The gas is expected to dissipate quickly and is not expected to be a problem.

  1:39 p.m. Update: The two girls have been found, Sacramento police say.
  A police K9 team patrolling near 10th Avenue and West Curtis Park found the girls.

• California Wildfire Emissions Equal Year Of Power Pollution

  SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Wildfires in California in 2018 released the rough equivalent of about 68 million tons of heat-trapping carbon dioxide – about the same amount of carbon emissions as are produced in a year to provide electricity to the state, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Friday.
  The carbon dioxide figure – based on data analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey – is more than 15 percent of all emissions produced by California in a year, according to Zinke.

  MEXICO CITY (CBS13) – Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is being inaugurated as Mexican president on Saturday, and California is sending two of its top politicians.
  Lopez Obrador was elected in July to succeed Enrique Peña Nieto. An outspoken populist and leftist, Lopez Obrador campaigned on a platform of helping the poor and rooting out corruption in Mexican politics.

• Possibly Elevated Vitamin D Levels Prompts Recall Of Several Dog Food Brands

  SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Potentially dangerous dog food has prompted several brands to recall their products.
  The FDA says seven different pet food makers have recalled their products since the start of November.
  Each one cited elevated Vitamin D level as the reason for the recall.
  Too much Vitamin D can lead to potentially deadly health problems in dogs – with puppies and younger animals most at-risk.

• Fallen Sutter Co. Sheriff K9 Bandit Laid To Rest

  YUBA CITYY (CBS13) – Police officers, deputies and others gathered for a solemn ceremony to remember a fallen K9 officer.
  “Bandit” was a Sutter County Sheriff K9 killed in the line of duty earlier this month in Butte County. He was shot and killed as he tried to take down a double-murder suspect during a gun battle with officers.
  He was laid to rest on Thursday.
  The four-year-old K9 had been with the department since 2017.

  SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – A shooting has left one man dead and another injured in the North Sacramento area Thursday night.
  According to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened around 8:20 p.m. on Flanders Way, off Don Julio Boulevard.
  Deputies say two men were shot and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
  One man is expected to survive, the other later died from his injuries.

  STOCKTON (CBS13) — Zulma Chavez-Ventura, who is accused of stomping, kicking and slamming her four-year-old stepdaughter to the ground, appeared in court Wednesday.

  STOCKTON (CBS13) — A pair of car crashes within a week of each other have claimed the lives of two people near a busy intersection in downtown Stockton.
