    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An Erie County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with assaulting a woman inside his Olcott Avenue home.
    Dennis McAndrew, 39, of Buffalo, was charged Thursday with second degree assault and two counts of second degree strangulation.

    ANGOLA, N.Y. (WIVB) — An Evans parent was charged with disorderly conduct after showing up to his daughter’s school on Wednesday.
    According to police, the man went to Lake Shore High School, concerned that his 14-year-old was participating in the national school walkouts without him knowing.

    (WIVB) — Regulators are pushing a record amount of water out of Lake Ontario to avoid a repeat of last year’s flooding.
    The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board oversees this.
    Their plan is to protect the environment while balancing the needs of communities along the shore.
    The board says outflows from the lake in February were the highest in history.

    WASHINGTON (WCMH) — Spending a year in space not only changes your outlook, it could change some of your genes.
    NASA has learned astronaut Scott Kelly and his identical twin– astronaut Mark Kelly– are no longer genetically the same.
    This was revealed in preliminary results from the space agency’s twins study, according to CNN.

    TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 26-year-old woman from Tonawanda is competing in this year’s Iditarod.
    Before moving to Alaska in 2013, Tara Cicatello graduated from Canisius College.
    In 2015, she completed her first sled-dog race, the Kuskowim 300. This year’s Iditarod is her first one.

  • SUNY Fredonia study says numerous water bottles are contaminated

    FREDONIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Geology & Environmental Sciences department at SUNY Fredonia conducted a study which showed that a number of brands of bottled water are contaminated by microplastic.
    “Plastic is defined as any synthetic or semi-synthetic polymer with thermo-plastic or thermo-set properties,” the report said.
    The researchers tested 11 different brands of water from 27 different lots. Overall, 259 individual bottles were tested.

    DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police in Dunkirk say a Fredonia man robbed a video game store.
    According to police, Nathaniel Lion, 30, was arrested Wednesday on a felony indictment warrant charging him with robbery.
    Authorities say the robbery took place at the Gamerz Haven store at the D&F Plaza on February 1.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon is recalling 260,000 AmazonBasics portable chargers after reports that they can overheat and cause fires or burns.
    The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says Amazon received 53 reports of the chargers overheating, including one of a customer who was burned by battery acid. There were also four reports of property damage due to fire and smoke.

    Joseph Mlyniec is accused of killing Robert Irvine III at his home in Perry last week.

    (CBS NEWS) – A Navy F-18 fighter jet crashed in the water near a naval station in Key West, Florida, Wednesday afternoon, killing both people on board, the Navy said. The two crew members on board ejected and rescued, but the Navy said late Wednesday that they both had died.

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a Birmingham, Alabama, hospital, wounding two men before turning the gun on himself Wednesday night, police said.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Cheektowaga man has been found guilty by jury of robbing an Amherst bank.
    Thomas Cascio, 52, of Cheektowaga, faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced in June.

    ARLINGTON, Va. — A 10-year-old German shepherd Irgo was supposed to be on a flight from Oregon to Kansas City, but when owner Kara Swindle arrived in Missouri, United Airlines gave her a Great Dane instead. The dogs got switched, and Irgo was sent to Japan.
