You have to wonder if AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson read "The Curse of the Mogul."
The book, co-written by Jonathan Knee, Bruce Greenwald, and Ana Seave, is a data-filled take down of mergers like AT&T's $85.4 billion bid for Time Warner Inc., which owns everything from HBO to CNN.
Almost none of these deals pay off for customers or shareholders.
"The single most consistent reason for underperformance in media companies is bad acquisitions," the authors of the 20

Obamacare premiums are going up by an average of 25% next year
The Obama administration says that Obamacare health-insurance premiums will go up by an average of 25% in 2017.
This, it argues in a new report, is because prices are slowly getting in line with costs.
From the report:
Notably, Marketplace rates through 2016 remained 12 to 20 percent below initial projections from the independent Congressional Budget Office. In addition, Urban Institute researchers recently found that 2016 Marketplace premiums were well below premiums for comparable employer cov -
The Canadian dollar is surging after the Bank of Canada said it might not have to cut rates again (CAD, USD)
A further easing from the Bank of Canada would bring the central bank closer to unconventional monetary policy and the decision on whether to cut rates again is not one to take lightly, Governor Stephen Poloz said on Monday.
Taking questions from lawmakers, Poloz also said that there were ingredients of a possible divergence between Canada and the United States, both economically and from a monetary policy standpoint. Some expect the U.S. Federal Reserve may raise rates before the end of the yea -

A hedge fund manager who retired at 36 says stay away from the industry
A hedge fund manager who ran money for one the world's biggest funds has a warning for those considering following his path: Don't bother.
"It's a pretty miserable industry," said Raoul Pal, who comanaged the GLG Global Macro Fund in London for GLG Partners and retired at 36 in 2004. "People are fed up."
Pal made the comments in a Facebook Live interview with Business Insider's Matt Turner on Monday.
Pal said he gets emails "all the time" asking how to get into the industry. His answer: "Don't b -

GM and FCA are up first, on Tuesday, followed by Tesla on Wednesday and Ford on Thursday.
Automaker earnings are being reported against the background of plateauing sales in the US. In 2015, 17.5 million cars and trucks rolled off dealer lots, -

Josh Brown is the CEO of the New York-based financial firm Ritholtz Wealth Management. A while before that, though, he solidified his place among the most prolific financial writers of the internet age with his blog, Reformed Broker. You can also see him on CNBC's Halftime Report.

RAOUL PAL ON US ELECTION: 'Volatility is way too low'
Americans have a big decision to make in next month's presidential election, but markets don't seem to know how to account for it, according to Raoul Pal, a former hedge fund manager.
"Volatility is way too low considering the outcomes and how nervous markets are about it," Pal told Business Insider's Matt Turner on Monday in a Facebook Live interview.
"I always have an expression, which is that suppressed volatility leads to hyper volatility," added Pal, who is the founder of Real Vision a -

Apple must show “more openness” when it comes to working with rivals, according to its co-founder Steve Wozniak.
Speaking in a video interview with Marketing Week, filmed during Festival of Marketing 2016, Wozniak was asked what advice he’d give to current Apple CEO Tim Cook.
“I would urge him, where it makes sense, to consider a lot more openness. [There is an opportunity] working with other companies that Apple consider competitors,” he answered.

Why Ted Baker’s Ray Kelvin is not your average CEO
A CEO who refuses to show his face in public may sound foolish in the age of Twitter and Instagram but then Ted Baker founder Ray Kelvin is not your average CEO.
Hugging means a lot to Kelvin and he has a rule that everyone at the brand’s head office must hug him before they talk. In fact, within seconds of our introduction, he embraces me with the sort of hug two reunited lovers might indulge in. It takes 73 seconds to end.
“Don’t report me for sexual harassment,” h -

Speaking at an event to launch its new Chivas Regal Ultis edition, the brand’s global ambassador Max Warner told Marketing Week that even though whisky’s advertising is large male driven, this is changing – albeit slowly.
“Our brand focus, due to a lot of our distribution and volume, is about masculinity and I don’t s -
Secret Marketer: Budgeting is a useless time sink that gives finance directors the illusion of control
The evenings are getting shorter, the leaves are falling from the trees and there is a slight chill in the air. This can only mean one thing: it’s time to get budgets completed.
I see budgeting as a time-consuming exercise of limited value. It is, essentially, the most ineffective practice in business. Luckily, there are a few big hitters who agree with me. “It sucks the energy, time, fun and big dreams out of an organisation. It hides opportunity and stunts growth. It brings out the -
