  SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Election officials in five California counties that mailed ballots to every voter for this month’s primary said the new model appears to have boosted turnout.

  A Sacramento Police officer sustained significant injuries Saturday after being involved in a traffic crash with another driver. It happened near Richards Boulevard and 16th Streets.
  Sacramento Police say it was around 6:19 p.m. when one of their officers appeared to try and communicate with dispatch but was unsuccessful.

• Giants’ Longoria Having Hand Surgery, Hopes To Return Soon

  LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria has elected to have surgery on his broken left hand, hoping that can speed his return to the field.
  Longoria was injured Thursday when he was hit in the hand by a pitch from Miami’s Dan Straily. Longoria underwent an examination in Los Angeles on Saturday morning and said surgery was not required.
