    OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA (WIVB) – A curious case is puzzling veterinarians at the Oklahoma City Zoo.
    Bridget, the zoo’s 18-year-old African lioness, has sprouted a mane- a feature typically only seen in male lions starting when they are around one year old, caused by increased testosterone hormone.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Airfield crews have been working for hours before the first flake fell from the sky, treating taxiways and runways to make sure flights can come and go safely.

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB)- 7-year-old Shawn ‘Baby Shawn’ Kennedy had a couple of reasons to smile Friday.
    He didn’t have to go to school because of a snow day; but more importantly, his brain tumor remains stable.
    “They usually give the kids six months to a year to live,” explained Shawn’s mom, Nicole Vathy.
    Kennedy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer when he was just four.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Former State Senator George Maziarz has pleaded guilty to offering of a false instrument for filing — a misdemeanor charge.
    The charge stemmed from a pass-through scheme where he used money from his campaign committee in order to make secret campaign payments to former Senate staffer Glen Aronow.
    Maziarz wanted to continue using Aronow’s services without the public knowing.
    Aronow left government service after charges of sexual harassment arose.

  • Southtowns digging out after latest wintry blast

    ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Western New Yorkers woke up to a thick blanket of white Friday morning, and the snow continued to fall through the early hours, making for difficult driving conditions.
    In the southtowns, most schools were closed and police were asking residents to avoid traveling if they could. Some roads were closed Friday morning because of trees down in the traveling lanes.
    This round of snow was heavy and wet, making it difficult to clear the streets or even clear off cars.

    MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — School officials say police are responding to a report of shots fired at a residence hall at Central Michigan University.
    The university said Friday morning that the report concerns Campbell Hall on its campus in Mount Pleasant. The university says the suspect is still at large, and police are urging students to take shelter.
    The city says the male suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — NYSEG and National Grid crews are working to restore power in western New York, as tens of thousands of people are without it.
    Most of the power outages are in the southern tier, in places like Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Erie County also has thousands of outages reported.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — UPDATE: As of Saturday afternoon, over 10,000 people across Allegany, Cattaraugus and Erie County are still without power.

  • Amherst Fire Department responds to carbon monoxide incident

    AMHERST (WIVB) – Several residents were taken out of their Amherst apartment building after a carbon monoxide warning.
    Fire crews responded to 90 Meyer Road late Thursday night. They did a room by room sweep.
    Residents were temporarily moved to another part of the apartment complex as crews worked to ventilate the affected apartments.
    It’s not clear what caused the detectors to go off.
    No injuries were reported.

    BUFFALO,N.Y. (WIVB)  If you are a fan of Buffalo’s music scene, it’s likely you have heard some of the popular musicians who collaborated on a new fundraising CD.

  • Tesla calls on state lawmakers to allow expansion in upstate New York

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Tesla is calling on the New York State Legislature to allow the company to expand its footprint in New York State.
    Tesla is the manufacturer and the seller, selling directly to customers from their own stores, but under current state law, automakers are required to sell new vehicles through franchise dealers.
    This means Tesla can’t add any more stores in the state. The company has five stores that operate in New York City, but none in upstate New York.

  • Homeless man, customer told to leave McDonald’s in Myrtle Beach

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — A McDonald’s customer says he bought a homeless man a meal and then both men were inexplicably told to leave the restaurant.
    The Myrtle Beach mayor and police say that’s not exactly what happened, and Mayor Brenda Bethune defended an officer’s response to the situation.
    The customer, Yossi Gallo, recorded the dispute and uploaded it to Facebook on Wednesday. It quickly went viral.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The DJ is dropping some fresh beats as Aspire students hit the floor, tearing it up during their prom.
    “It’s a day for our high school students to get away from all the equipment, therapy, challenges and just have a day where they can be typical teens,” said Courtney Eastman, a teacher’s aide.
    Eastman is one of the many staff members who have been planning the prom for the students. She says it’s her favorite day of the year.
