  • Buffalo woman pleads guilty to cocaine charges

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo woman has pleaded guilty to cocaine charges following an investigation by the DEA and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
    Elisa Rivera Ortiz, 36, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to attempted possession with intent to distribute cocaine in federal court.
    According to the assistant U.S. attorney handling the case, in April  and June, post office inspectors intercepted a two packages addressed to Ortiz, which contained cocaine.

    ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) — A woman who led police on a chase told arresting officers that she was Mother Mary en route to pick up Baby Jesus and had permission from God to speed.

  • Man charged with manslaughter in June thruway crash expected to face judge

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man who faces charges for a fatal crash on the Thruway is expected to face a judge on Tuesday.
    New York State police say Kristofer Gregorek was shopping online and filling out a survey on his cell phone when he rear-ended a car driven by Ellen Volpe in June.
    Volpe was an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
    Gregorek was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

    According to police, a woman in her late 40s was found dead in the 300 block of Sobieski St. Sunday night. The body was found around 10:30 p.m.

    NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A North Tonawanda man has been charged with sex crimes.
    Edward Lockwood, 56, was accused of criminal sexual act, sexual abuse and unlawful surveillance.
    North Tonawanda police say the crimes were committed in his Schenck St. apartment. The victim was identified as an adult woman, police say.

    Deputy Brandon Dennington spotted the little guy while he was headed to an assignment with the Golden State Warriors.

  • Woman had 14 worms pulled from her eye after rare infection

    NEW YORK (AP) — An Oregon woman who had worms coming out of her eye is being called the first known human case of a parasitic infection spread by flies.
    Fourteen tiny worms were removed from the left eye of the 26-year-old woman in August 2016. Scientists reported the case Monday.
    The woman, Abby Beckley, was diagnosed in August 2016 with Thelazia gulosa. That’s a type of eye worm seen in cattle in the northern United States and southern Canada, but never before in humans.

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The principal at a Philadelphia elementary school in a violent corner of the city is paying eighth-graders to not fight.

  • New York State to provide flu vaccines to children regardless of ability to pay

    ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a 30-day amendment to provide flu vaccines to all children in the state.
    Children will be able to be vaccinated for the flu- even if families can’t pay for it- through the “Vaccines for Children Program”.
    The legislation complies with the governor’s executive order temporarily allowing phramacists to administer flu vaccines to children two to 18.
