• Niagara County Sheriff’s Office urges caution due to weather conditions

    NIAGARA COUNTY. N.Y. (WIVB) – The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is monitoring the weather and roadway conditions across Niagara County amid a blizzard warning issued for northern Erie County to the Niagara County border up until 1 a.m. Wednesday.
    The sheriff’s office warns that roadways may be covered by blowing and drifted snow, in addition to reduced visibility.
    Many vehicles have been reported off the roadway.
    Motorists are asked to allow themselves extra time for travel.

    LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – Code Blue is in effect for the City of Lockport Tuesday night.
    The Salvation Army at 50 Cottage St. will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for homeless individuals and those without power.
    Cots, blankets, and snacks are available.
    Admittance ends at 10 p.m.
  • Travel advisory issued for northern Erie County

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A travel advisory has been issued for northern Erie County, including all of Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Alden, and areas north to the Erie/Niagara County line.
    The travel advisory is due to the National Weather Service Buffalo Blizzard warning.
    Due to whiteout conditions, no unnecessary travel is advised.

    LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — One person has been confirmed dead in an accident involving dozens of vehicles on I-90 East on Tuesday afternoon.
    Another person is seriously injured. Eleven people have been transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

  • Man killed in multi-vehicle Thruway crash identified

    LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — One person has been confirmed dead in an accident involving dozens of vehicles on I-90 East on Tuesday afternoon.
    He was identified as 64-year-old Elba resident Edward Torres. He was pronounced dead at ECMC.
    Another person was seriously injured. Eleven people have been transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

  • At least 75 vehicles involved in crash on Thruway

    LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — At least 75 vehicles were involved in an accident on the Thruway in Lancaster.
    The accident occurred on the eastbound portion of the highway.

  • Man charged with setting fire in Lackawanna pleads not guilty

    LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man has been indicted on charges accusing him of starting a Lackawanna fire.
    Authorities say Corey Green, 20, started the blaze at an apartment building on Ingham St. in April of last year.
    20 people were inside, and seven went to the hospital.
    Zaid Soliman, 3, and Zainab Soliman, 4, were two of those seriously injured.
    Some family members spent up to a full month in the hospital.

    NEW SCOTLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — After battling an illness that stemmed from an assignment following the 9/11 terror attacks, a New York State Trooper has died.
    Trooper Michael Anson aided in search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
    Anson was from Albany County and had been a member of the State Police since 1986. He was most recently stationed in New Scotland, and served his entire career in Troop G.

    UPDATE: The Skyway has reopened Tuesday afternoon after closing around 11:15 a.m. due to visibility issues. 
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Visibility issues have shut down the Skyway in both directions.
    Buffalo police made the announcement on Twitter around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.
    As of 2:10 p.m., Route 5 eastbound is closed from Route 179 to Church Street (7.2 miles) and westbound, Route 5 is closed from Church Street to Route 179 (6.7 miles).

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Erie County Legislator Patrick Burke is running for a spot in the New York State Assembly.
    Burke posted a video on Facebook and Instagram Tuesday morning, saying “It’s official now! I will be running for New York State Assembly in 2018! Time to get to work! Go Bills!”

  • Children ordered to sleep in bed with murdered brother’s body

    HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida man was charged with murdering his stepson, then forcing the boy’s brothers to sleep in the same bed with the body all night.
    31-year-old Jack Junior Montgomery is being held in jail on $870,000 bond. He was accused of repeatedly punching and kicking 7-year-old Brice Russell.
    Montgomery told investigators he disciplined the child after Brice got out of bed to get a cookie.

  • Number of flu cases in Erie County increasing this season

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Erie County Department of Health says flu activity “has been steadily increasing” since the middle of December.
    During Winter, the health department says influenza “is responsible for about 30% of all the respiratory infections.”

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Western New York’s largest suburb recently welcomed a new top official — something that has not been done in almost a decade.
    Democrat Brian Kulpa was elected to replace former Amherst Supervisor Barry Weinstein, a Republican who served two four-year terms.

    TOWN OF BENNINGTON, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 3-year-old boy who was shot over the weekend in Wyoming County continues to recover.
    The incident occurred Saturday morning.
    The Wyoming County Sheriff’s office says the boy was shot in the chest and shoulder area at a home in the Town of Bennington.
    According to authorities, the boy was shot after handling the loaded gun himself. The shooting was ruled accidental.
