    (CNN) – Huzaifah Khaled was struck by the rising number of homeless people he saw.He thought there had to be a way for them to get food and clothing even when shelters and charities were closed.So, Khaled came up with an elementary, yet economical, solution: a vending machine for the homeless.The machine provides basic necessities — water, fresh fruit, sandwiches, socks, toiletries and books.     TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Tonawanda City Parks vehicle broke through the ice Friday afternoon while plowing the Ives Pond skating area off of Delaware Street.
    The parks employee was not injured, and there were no other injuries reported.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo officials were at Iskalo Development Corporation’s Electric Tower on Friday morning for a test of the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop.
    Hundreds of lights and the timing of the ball’s descent were tested shortly before 11:30 a.m.
    The actual ball drop will take place where the test occurred — 535 Washington St.
    The event will be the 30th annual New Year’s Eve “Buffalo Ball Drop & Fireworks.”

    BANGKOK, Thailand (WIVB) — Some babies in Bangkok are getting ready for the Chinese New Year.
    A hospital dressed them as puppies to celebrate 2018 being the Year of the Dog.
    12 animals make up the traditional Chinese zodiac, with each year having its own beliefs.
    Nurses dressed babies in blue and brown crochet hats, as well as dog outfits, and placed the babies against a fluffy backdrop for a photo shoot.

  • Trial for suspect in Buffalo Billion investigation pushed back

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The trial for one of the suspects in the Buffalo Billion investigation has been pushed back.
    Joseph Percoco was accused of taking up to $125,000 from two state contractors while he was running Governor Andrew Cuomo’s re-election campaign in 2014.
    He is one of eight people who have been accused of taking part in a bid-rigging scheme.
    Percoco’s trial will begin on January 22.

    NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s deadliest residential fire in decades spread through every floor of a Bronx apartment building within a matter of minutes, city officials said, killing 12 people and sending other residents scrambling outside into the cold and down fire escapes to safety.
