  DENVER (AP) – Ten people, including two in Colorado, have died in avalanches across the West in the last 10 days, making this month the deadliest January for slides in nearly 20 years.
  Eleven people have died in slides throughout the whole month, including four over the weekend, for a total of 14 so far this snow season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which tracks slides across the country.

  FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) – A Denver man has logged the fastest Grand Canyon river trip on record, paddling his kayak down the Colorado River in 34 hours and two minutes.
  Tom Martin, secretary of the Grand Canyon Historical Society, says Ben Orkin reached the end of his 277-mile journey Sunday. Orkin beat a record set last week and the previous one set by non-motorized boat in 1983.

  NEW YORK (AP) – Mike Piazza’s No. 31 will be retired by the New York Mets this summer.
  The Mets said Monday the number will be retired July 30 before a game against Colorado, part of the weekend celebrating the catcher, who will be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame on July 24.

  DENVER (AP) – Colorado regulators are trying to finalize new rules intended to give local governments a limited say in where large oil and gas facilities are located.

(CBS4) – An Evergreen man accused of shooting and killing two bear cubs last September made his plea Monday morning.Daniel Clay Williams, 50, appeared at Jefferson County Court and pleaded not guilty to two felonies. He faces charges of an illegal discharge of a firearm and aggravated cruelty to animals. He faces six other misdemeanor charges.

• CDOT Triggers 300-Foot Long Slide For Avalanche Mitigation On Red Mountain Pass

  OURAY, Colo. (CBS4) – The Colorado Department of Transportation on Monday closed U.S. 550 over Red Mountain Pass for avalanche mitigation but it has since reopened.
  On Monday CDOT crews triggered a slide near the Mother Cline Mine that came down on U.S. 550. It was approximately 5 feet high and 300 feet long. The highway was closed from mile marker 72 to 92.

  ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning earned back half of the $4 million pay cut he accepted last winter by leading the Denver Broncos back to the Super Bowl.
