  • Traffic event shuts down part of Thruway

    BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Part of I-90 was shut down on Monday afternoon due to a traffic event.
    The Thruway is closed from Route 98 (Batavia) to Route 490 (Rochester/LeRoy).
    There is police activity at the scene.
    “New York State Police assets are on scene continuing to pursue a peaceful resolve,” State police tell News 4.

    BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Part of I-90 was shut down on Monday afternoon due to a traffic event.
    The Thruway is closed from Route 98 (Batavia) to Route 490 (Rochester/LeRoy).
    There is police activity at the scene.
    “New York State Police assets are on scene continuing to pursue a peaceful resolve,” State police tell News 4.
    UPDATE: The suspect in this afternoon’s incident is now in custody, and traffic is back to normal.

  • Correction officers charged with possessing drugs

    ALDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two correction officers have been charged with bringing drugs into Wende Correctional Facility.
    New York State police say they were contacted after Gregory Sulkowski, 38, of Blasdell, and James Keller, 37, of Buffalo, were reported to have drugs after a K9 search of employees.
    Both were charged with promoting prison contraband and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

    NEWFANE, N.Y. (WIVB) — Newfane Central School District was in lockout Monday morning.
    Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour says a male student made threats and was taken into custody.
    The lockout was lifted around Noon, and the school day has continued on like normal.

    They say it happened on Niagara Avenue, but the time of the incident is not clear.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — “This isn’t uncommon for us we’ve always dealt with school threats,” said New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan.

  • Marilla teen admits to killing 2-year-old

    MARILLA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Marilla teen has admitted to his role in the death of a toddler.
    Last March, Devon VanDerWege, 18, caused the death of 2-year-old Ethan Bigham, whom he was babysitting.
    Bigham’s cause of death was blunt force trauma.
    On Monday morning, VanDerWege pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree manslaughter. He is in custody without bail.
    When sentenced on April 9, VanDerWege could spend up to 20 years in prison.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo community honored the life of a transgender woman Sunday afternoon. 35-year-old Tonya Harvey was shot and killed on the city’s East Side earlier this month.
