  An elephant named Annabelle, who became prolific with a paintbrush and easel, is responsible for the creation of the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage.

  Farming begins from the ground up for Tom Zimmer and his crew at the Calypso Farm and Ecology Center.
  The non-profit organization outside Fairbanks offers community classes in everything from soil basics and fertilizer to animal husbandry and chicken butchering.

• Former Skagway tribal administrator pleads not guilty in embezzlement case

  The former administrator of Skagway’s tribal organization recently pleaded not guilty to four embezzlement charges.
  Delia Commander is accused of embezzling about $300,000 from the Skagway Traditional Council between 2010 and 2014 while she was working as a tribal administrator.
  She allegedly used the money to pay for things like personal travel and shopping, federal prosecutors said.

• Trump announces plan to privatize air traffic control

  President Donald Trump announced Monday a plan to privatize the nation’s air traffic control system — a move that would remove the job of tracking and guiding airplanes from the purview of the Federal Aviation Administration.
  “Today we’re proposing to take American air travel into the future, finally,” Trump said.

• California man critically injured in crash on Parks Highway

  TRAPPER CREEK, Alaska (AP) – A 66-year-old California man was critically injured when his car crossed the centerline of the Parks Highway and sideswiped a pickup.
  Alaska State Troopers say the crash caused both vehicles to roll.
  The crash occurred just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday near Trapper Creek.
  Investigators say a southbound car driven by William Netro crossed the centerline and struck a one-ton truck driven by 32-year-old Thomas Mosimann of Switzerland.

• Fire near Dillingham grows to 1,000 acres

  The Alaska Division of Forestry is keeping an eye on a 1,000-acre wildfire burning near Dillingham.
  The Kenakuchuk Fire is about 40 miles northeast of Dillingham — burning in a limited protection area. The Division of Forestry is monitoring it, but not actively fighting it.
  No structures are in danger. They believe it was sparked by lightening.

  JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – Alaska wildlife officials say a Douglas Island homeowner shot a brown bear after feeling threatened by the animal.
