• Update: Armed conflict in Chevak leaves one dead, another wounded

  Updated: 2:14 p.m. Thursday
  One person is dead and another wounded after an armed conflict yesterday in the village of Chevak.
  Alaska State troopers report that Harold Paniyak, 24, shot a village police officer and then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
  According to another VPO, the suspect shot the officer three times before taking his own life.
  The suspect died instantly, and the wounded VPSO was medevac’d to Anchorage Hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries.

  One person is dead and another is wounded after an armed conflict yesterday in the village of Chevak.

  A Petersburg fisherman gill netting near Red Bay last week pulled in an “uncommon” haul.
  The salmon shark was a pretty uncommon catch in the waters near Petersburg, Joe Willis said.

• Haines borough introduces junk-car initiative

  The Haines Borough has had enough of derelict cars piling up around the area.
  On Thursday, Public Facilities Director Brad Ryan will host a public meeting to discuss the plan for removing dead vehicles.
  Community members with an unwanted automobile-lawn ornament can submit their name to the borough.
  The plan for now is for 15 names to be drawn at random.
  Selected residents will pay 50 bucks and the borough will come with a flatbed to remove the junked car or truck.

• University of Alaska suffers cybersecurity breach

  The University of Alaska is reporting a security breach.
  An email issued Tuesday says UA became aware of the cyber attack several months ago, and there’s no evidence that personal information was accessed or stolen.
  It says the breach occurred at the university’s Mat-Su campus, and that more than 5,400 names and social security numbers were on the hacked system.

  A man at the Wildwood Correctional Complex died by apparent suicide Tuesday, though his death is still under investigation.
  According to a State Trooper dispatch, Walter Shade, 30, of Soldotna was arrested and sent to Wildwood Pre-Trial Facility on September 1 for stealing $3,000 worth of tires from a store earlier this summer.

• Lawsuit targets Mat-Su Borough marijuana initiative

  In a last-minute bid to overturn a Matanuska-Suisitna Borough ballot initiative banning commercial marijuana, some cannabis supporters have served the Borough with a lawsuit.
  The complaint wants the courts to force the Borough to take the initiative off the October election ticket, and the outcome of the case could have widespread implications.
