Tesla misses on earnings (TSLA)
Tesla on Wednesday reported a second-quarter loss that was greater than analysts had forecast, as well as revenues that fell short of expectations.
The electric-car maker's adjusted loss per share came in at $1.06, and adjusted revenue was $1.56 billion.
Analysts had estimated an adjusted loss per share of $0.60 and revenue of $1.63 billion, according to Bloomberg.
The company said that it delivered 14,402 vehicles in the second quarter, about 30 more than it preannounced in -
STOCKS BARELY BUDGE: Here's what you need to know
Stocks across all three major averages barely budged Wednesday, marking a 15th straight day of moves less than 1% in either direction.
Stocks inched into positive territory early in the day and pretty much stayed close to that level, with each average finishing the day up only a few tenths of one percent. Oil, however, did retrace some of its recent losses by moving up a little under 4%.
While stocks were placid, there were a number of economic and business headlines. But first, t -
A rumor that Steve Ballmer wants to buy Twitter drove the stock up 9%, but an analyst says it won't happen (TWTR)
Twitter stock is up nearly 9% in midday trading on Wednesday on market chatter of a potential acquisition.
The rumored buyers: former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Saudi Arabia's Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal.
But according to SunTrust analyst Robert Peck, the chatter is just a rumor and a deal is unlikely to happen.
"We think it is extremely unlikely that Twitter would want to sell currently," Peck wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday.
Peck said that the rumor has Ballmer and the princ -
For Tesla shareholders, SolarCity comes with deepening losses (SCTY, TSLA)
SolarCity may soon become part of electric car maker Tesla, in a merger aimed at creating a sustainable energy superpower. The $2.6 billion deal has drawn some criticism due to the fact that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also the chairman of SolarCity.
Some observers have called the deal a "bailout" for SolarCity, whose solar panel installation business has burned an increasing amount of cash. As this chart from Statista shows, SolarCity's losses have been growing at a much faster -
The Thai baht is tumbling
The Thai baht is tumbling after the Bank of Thailand kept rates unchanged.
The currency is down by 0.6% at 34.991 per dollar as of 2:12 p.m. ET.
Most economists polled expected the bank to keep its policy rate unchanged at 1.50%, according to Bloomberg.
"With Thailand’s economy looking stronger than it has done for a while, there is no strong impetus for an immediate rate cut," wrote Capital Economics Asia Economist Krystal Tan in a note.
"That said, we see scope for the policy rate t -
The world's biggest hedge fund thinks the next radical change in central-bank policy is almost upon us
The world's biggest hedge fund thinks that the next radical change in central-bank policy is almost upon us.
Bridgewater Associates sent a note to clients on Wednesday written by Greg Jensen, Jason Rotenberg, and Jeff Amato. Jensen is Bridgewater's co-CIO and former co-CEO.
The note said that central-bank policies up until now — such as dropping interest rates and quantitative easing — haven't boosted economies enough. Policy makers need to try something radi -
Here are 10 jobs that pay way more than they used to
While a lot of jobs have lost ground in terms of wages in the last several years, some actually pay better than they did ten years ago.
We recently released a list of 22 jobs that saw big increases in real average annual wages between 2005 and 2015, according to estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment Statistics program.
Here are the 10 jobs with the biggest increases in wages over that decade (adjusted for inflation) from our ranking, along with th -
Rising sea levels could put 2 million homes underwater — these 11 states are the most at-risk
A new analysis from Zillow has estimated that if sea levels rise as much as climate scientists predict they will by 2100, nearly 2 million coastal US homes would be lost.
New research published in Nature found that sea levels could rise 6 feet by 2100 — nearly twice as high as previous expectations, according to Zillow.
If this happens, nearly 300 US cities would lose at least half their homes, and 36 US cities would be wiped out completely.
"As we move through this century, homeowner -

Kate Spade is losing some of its most important customers — and shares are tanking
Kate Spade is not invincible to the fickle nature of retail.

Would you hire a marketer without a formal qualification in marketing?
Zoe Burns-Shore, head of brand and marketing, First Direct
I would definitely not be put off hiring someone if they didn’t have a marketing qualification. My team is a real mix of people with and without formal qualifications.
I also don’t believe that formal study gives you a stronger appreciation of aspects like segmentation or brand equity. It might give an idea of the theory that sits behind these areas but in practice it’s just as easy to grasp the principles of segm -

The programmatic process is starting to challenge other media spheres, such as radio and television -
