Marketers need to understand the widening scope of vulnerability to avoid alienating customers
Whether it is a permanent condition such as dementia or the short-term pain of a broken leg, at any one time a large percentage of a brand’s customers could be in a vulnerable state. If marketers fail to speak to these individuals in the most appropriate way, they could risk alienating consumers when they are in most need of help.
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) responded to this issue in May with the launch of its Responsible Marketing Commission. It oversees the Vul -

Marketers are taking control of programmatic to increase transparency
Programmatic is changing the way brands buy media at a rapid rate, yet there are mounting concerns about a lack of transparency in the marketplace. Last month, Marketing Week columnist Mark Ritson argued that there is a “culture of agency kickbacks” within programmatic advertising whereby media owners or suppliers pay fees to media agencies.
He suggested that such kickbacks encourage agencies to buy media that does not align with their client&r -

Ryanair wants to work with Airbnb and Booking.com with its new accommodation service
Talking to Marketing Week, Ryanair’s CMO, Kenny Jacobs, said that the service, which launches on 1 October will include a wide range of accommodation, such as hotels, hostels, B&B’s, homestays and villas. It is aimed at larger brands with “aggregated inventory”, rather than working directly with individual B&B’s or hotels.
“A good candidate has the right inventory of accommodation types. They should be a valued player because we are a valued brand and -

How to handle your lack of experience at a job interview
We've all worried about being under-qualified for a role we've applied for. While a common concern particularly for new graduates or career changers, the thought of being 'found out' at the interview stage is enough to send even the most hardened job seeker into a cold sweat./>
The good news is that there are a number of strategies that can be used to counteract and overcome a lack of relevant experience, starting with the following:

How Vice, the BBC and Just Eat are using Whatsapp
Vice Media
Vice Media believes that the reason why chat apps are working for brands is down to reach. Mark Adams, SVP of Vice Media, said that text messages are more personal and that “mobile is unique and an unshared device. It is not about screen size but the personal touch”.
Adams said that brands should focus on a “personal touch” through visual messages. He said that customers react well to pictures and that those with imagery receive 38% more likes and 32% more comm -
How the BBC and Just Eat are using Whatsapp
BBC
The BBC started using WhatsApp in 2014 during the Ebola Crisis when it needed to find a way to update those in West Africa quickly. Though a long process at first, involving adding each individual to a WhatsApp group one at a time, the group allowed the BBC to inform its audience about the evolving crisis through articles such as “5 ways to avoid contacting Ebola”.
Speaking at the We Are Social Chat Apps 101 event, the BBC’s mobile editor, Trushar Barot, said that the plat -
Secret Marketer: Don’t get carried away with the ‘Big Ideas’ at Cannes – it’s the simple things that add value
The Cannes Lions festival is nearly upon us, where legends of the ad world swoop down to the French Riviera to network and talk about creativity, storytelling or that old chestnut – ’the Big Idea’.
However, yours truly has never been one of the cool kids, sitting on the yacht in Cannes, drinking daiquiris, or on the main stage with Sir Martin Sorrell. Much to my chagrin, of course.
I love reading and learning about the latest opinions and ideas about creativity from assorted ad -
