    Charges Filed Against Man Suspected Of Killing Stanislaus County Deputy
    MODESTO (CBS13/AP) – Prosecutors say a California man knowingly shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy in the line of duty.
    The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday charged David Machado with first degree murder. He’s accused of gunning down Deputy Dennis Wallace on Sunday near Modesto.
    Charges against Machado include special circumstances, making him eligible for a death sentence. Prosecutors, however, have not said what punishment they’ll seek.

    Suspects Crashed Pickup Through Stockton Chevron Mart, Tried To Steal ATM
    STOCKTON (CBS13) – A Stockton store owner is cleaning up after a smash and grab burglary attempt early Tuesday morning.
    Stockton police say a pickup truck drove through the front door of a Chevron near West and E. Morada Lanes around 3 a.m. A clerk inside the store at the time ran into a back room and locked himself inside.
    Two suspects were inside the pickup. Police say the pair tried to steal an ATM machine.
    The pickup soon left. It’s unclear if anything was taken.

    Dogs Rescued After Roseville House Fire
    ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – A Roseville resident was taken to the hospital after a house fire Monday night.
    The scene was at a duplex on Cirby Oaks Court. The Roseville Fire Department says crews responded to the scene a little before 7:30 p.m. and found one of the units on fire.
    A resident of the home was already outside, but was suffering from smoke-related injuries. That person was transported to the hospital.
    Crews were able to contain the flames to just one side of the duplex.

    SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The Sacramento City Council is looking at approving artificial turf in residential front yards.
    Right now, city code says there must be live vegetation in the front and side yards in residential and nonresidential areas.
    Artificial turf is currently banned. The prohibition has been on the books, in some form, since 1984.

    Linda Coleman says she was inside a My Wireless store on Mack Road on Friday trying to pay her bill when the clerk threw the remote at her. Coleman says the employee got violent when she pulled out her phone to document the dispute.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Gwen Ifill, co-anchor of PBS’ “NewsHour” with Judy Woodruff and a veteran journalist who moderated two vice presidential debates, died Monday of cancer, the network said.
    She was 61.
    A former reporter for The New York Times and The Washington Post, Ifill switched to television in the 1990s and covered politics and Congress for NBC News. She moved to PBS in 1999 as host of “Washington Week” and also worked for the nightly “NewsHour”
