• Crews fight fire at apartment above The Yelling Goat restaurant in Lancaster

    LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) –  Crews battled smoke and fire in an apartment above The Yelling Goat restaurant on Central Avenue in Lancaster Tuesday afternoon.
    The fire was knocked down quickly, Lancaster emergency manager Ron Rozler said.
    Everyone got out of the building safely. There’s no damage estimate yet .
    The Yelling Goaf restaurant is on the first floor of the building. There are several apartments on the second floor.

    (AP) – Less than a week after 17 people were fatally shot at a Florida high school, the state House has voted down a motion to take up a bill that would ban assault rifles, effectively killing the measure for this session.

  • Applebee’s and IHOP to close up to 120 restaurants in 2018

    (WIVB) – Applebee’s and IHOP will close up to 120 restaurants nationally in 2018, according to a press release from the chains’ parent company Tuesday. 
    DineEquity, which owns both IHOP and Applebee’s, released the information in its fourth quarter fiscal report.
    About 60 to 80 Applebee’s locations are anticipated to close in 2018. Closures will be based on “several criteria”, including meeting brand and image standards as well as operational result

  • Buffalo man charged with starving, injuring bulldog

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo man was arrested Tuesday after police found an injured dog at a Kay Street address.
    According to Buffalo Police, the dog was a stolen American Bulldog who was found injured without adequate food or shelter.
    Buffalo Police arrested Gene Smith, 27, of Buffalo and charged him with criminal possession of stolen property and torturing or injuring animals/failure to provide sustenance.
    Buffalo Police are investigating whether Smith stole other dogs.

  • Explosions, fire in AMR parking lot lead to damaged ambulances

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Three ambulances were damaged by a fire at the American Medical Response parking lot on William L Gaiter Pkwy.
    Crews responded around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
    Officials say the fire started in one vehicle and spread to the other two. A building and other vehicles in the parking lot were also damaged.
    According to the fire chief at the scene, there were three explosions in one ambulance, one of which involved an oxygen tank.

    WELLSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Dresser-Rand plant in Wellsville is set to close.
    More than 200 employees will be affected by the closure, which is expected to take about two years.

  • Local senator wants money for school resource officers in state budget

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A local senator wants the state to set aside money to pay to put school resource officers (SROs) in all New York schools.
    Sen. Patrick Gallivan wants funding to be included for SROs in the 2018-19 state budget.
    These trained officers help to deter school violence.
    The program is currently only in place in some school districts.
    Gallivan says in the past, the Senate has secured funding for the SRO program to allow schools to have part-time or full-time officers.

    RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — ISO Beauty is recalling about 73,000 hair dryers because an issue with the cord can burn users.
    The cord of the Ionic Pro hair dryers can get brittle near the base of the dryer.
    ISO Beauty has received 35 reports of dryers sparking or smoking. There have been two reports of flames coming from the product, and three reports of users getting burn injuries on their hands or fingers.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.(WIVB) — A booming real estate market could lead to a spike in Cheektowaga homeowner’s property tax bills.
    The improved market means property values are now being reassessed.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- A jury trial that lasted almost three months failed to convict four men involved in a murder case for the 2009 death of Jabril Harper.
    Defendant Amilcar Ramos was acquitted. The jury was hung when it came to defendants Ernest Green, Daniel Rodriguez, Rodshaun Black.

  • Friend: Hit and run victim “doesn’t remember what happened”

    TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – The search continues for the driver who hit a man in a wheelchair and took off in the Town of Tonawanda Friday evening.
    Police have identified the victim as 56-year-old Kevin Sheridan. He’s at ECMC recovering from head and chest injuries.
