  Juneau residents remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice during three separate Memorial Day observances on Monday.
  The Veterans of Foreign Wars Taku Post 5559 hosted an event at Evergreen Cemetery as the American Legion Auke Bay Post 25 had a ceremony at Alaskan Memorial Park.

• APD: Shooting suspect arrested at Anchorage airport

  Anchorage police have arrested a man they say is responsible for shooting another man in the Mountain View neighborhood Monday afternoon.
  Luis Alberto Aponte-Sosa, 33, was taken into custody by Airport Police at around 6 p.m. Monday at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Anchorage police spokesperson Renee Oistad wrote in a Tuesday release.

• Alaska preparing layoff warnings with state budget unsettled

  JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – The state of Alaska plans to send layoff warnings to thousands of government workers this week, as legislators remain at odds over spending and a plan to address Alaska’s deficit.
  Department of Administration spokeswoman Minta Montalbo says about 17,000 notices will be sent to state employees Thursday, “barring swift action by the Legislature.”

  In this week’s edition of Gardentalk, Master Gardener Ed Buyarski recommends smothering buttercups with cardboard and then layering over with clean garden soil. Buttercups should be covered before they flower and disperse their seeds. The plant, an invasive species imported from Europe, also sends out runners like strawberries.
  As long as the layer of soil under the cardboard is not disturbed, the buttercup seeds should remain dormant.

• Alaska State Troopers don’t slow down over Memorial Day Weekend

  It’s a busy time of year for Alaska State Trooper Pierre Burkett.
  “Reason why I stopped you, it is 55 miles per hour through here, you were doing 67,” Burkett told a driver after pulling him over on the Knik-Goose Bay Road Monday.
  He said traffic “has been behaving itself” over the long holiday weekend, but he did have some speeders, stop sign runners. He said he hasn’t seen very many aggressive drivers.

  The Anchorage Police Department (APD) is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 14-year-old Zada Morning.
  According to a release from APD, she was last seen in the Mountain View neighborhood, near the 4000 block of Peterkin Avenue around 5:20 p.m. Monday.
  Morning is described by police as mixed race, 5 feet 7 inches tall weighing about 190 pounds. She was wearing a pink t-shirt, a black hoodie and black shorts when she was last seen.

  FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – The Interior’s lone commercial dairy is closing, at least for the summer, leaving only one other commercial dairy in Alaska.
  The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Monday that Northern Lights Dairy is closing its doors for what owners hope will only be for a few months.

• First cruise ship of the summer docks at Port of Anchorage

  The first cruise ship to dock at the Port of Anchorage this summer pulled into town early Monday morning.
  Nearly 1,400 passengers disembarked from Holland America’s ‘Amsterdam’ to check out the sights before an 11 p.m. call to be back on the ship.
  Julie Saupe, president of Visit Anchorage, said the cruise industry in the state continues to grow. According to Saupe, 1,060,000 cruise passengers are predicted to sail to Alaska this summer — a new record.

• Volunteers place markers in Anchorage cemetery to honor fallen soldiers

  Wenda Sudduth and others from American Legion Post 1 found the going not so easy at Anchorage’s Memorial Park Cemetery. They went on a quest Sunday to pay tribute some of our nation’s most honored dead.
  They placed religious markers at the grave sites of those who served in the nation’s military.
  “I come from a military family. I didn’t join the military, this is me making up for that I guess,” Sudduth told said.
