ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Alaska State Troopers are investigating a fatal shooting in the village of Pilot Station.
A village public safety officer told troopers that 27-year-old Dennis Alick died.
Troopers say a suspect has been identified.
Troopers took the call on the death early Thursday morning. Troopers traveled to the Yukon River community 425 miles west of Anchorage to investigate.
An autopsy is planned by the state medical examiner.

Pentagon: US dropped largest non-nuclear bomb in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Pentagon says U.S. forces in Afghanistan dropped the military’s largest non-nuclear bomb on an Islamic State target in Afghanistan.
Adam Stump is a Pentagon spokesman. Stump says it was the first-ever combat use of the bomb, known as the GBU-43, which he said contains 11 tons of explosives. The Air Force calls it the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb. Based on the acronym, it has been nicknamed the “Mother Of All Bombs.”

‘Misdirected’ airstrike by U.S.-led coalition kills 18 allied fighters in Syria

Average 30-year mortgage rate falls to 2017 low of 4.08 pct
WASHINGTON (AP) – Long-term U.S. mortgage rates fell for a fourth straight week, with the benchmark 30-year rate marking a new low for the year.
Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the rate on 30-year fixed-rate home loans declined to 4.08 percent this week from 4.10 percent last week. That brought the rate under its previous 2017 low of 4.09 percent reached on Jan. 19. UAA restructures ESL services
The University of Alaska Anchorage is making major changes to its English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Beginning in fall 2017 the school will no longer offer classes like Oral Fluency or Vocabulary Enhancement.

Spring is wake-up call for bears in Anchorage area
Call it a sure sign of spring: bears are starting to wake up in the Anchorage area. Ken Marsh, a biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said the agency has received reports of bears in Anchorage, Eagle River, Chugiak and along Turnagain Arm.
“So far it’s just black bears, but there’s no reason to think brown bears aren’t waking up too,” Marsh said.

Road ruts and studded tires: Change-over season is here
Anyone who has driven along the Glenn Highway recently has seen, and felt, the deep ruts in the road. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT) says the problem is largely caused by studded tires and it’s an expensive problem to fix.
DOT spokesperson Shannon McCarthy said crews repave the Glenn every seven years, repairing the damage done by the studs.
