The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is keeping a close eye on a new bacterial strain in Alaska that has already killed four people.
According to state epidemiologist Dr. Joe McLaughlin, most of the patients have been homeless and most experienced chronic alcohol abuse. McLaughlin said the strain is a form of Group A Strep that was first detected in Fairbanks this February. Invasive strep outbreak claims lives of 4 Alaskans
Four Alaskans have died this year in an outbreak of invasive strep bacteria that has mostly affected the homeless and Alaska Natives in the state’s two largest cities.
State epidemiologist Joe McLaughlin says there have been 28 confirmed hospitalization cases of a new strain of Group A Streptococcus bacteria, starting with 10 cases in Fairbanks and, more recently, 18 cases in Anchorage. Two of the deaths occurred in Fairbanks and two in Anchorage.

Updated, 4:53 p.m. Nov. 29, 2016: Charges have been filed for recent boat break-ins in Heritage Harbor. According to the criminal complaint, Aaron Howell, 20, and Laven Ritchie, 19, face several felony charges for burglary, theft and tampering with evidence. Misdemeanors for theft and criminal mischief were also filed.
The complaint states that three boats had items stolen from them on Nov. 19 with a total value of about $2,800.

Two suspects are awaiting charges, but police would not identify them.

Mariner safe after vessel loses power, goes aground on Cape Puget

An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued a mariner Monday after his sail boat grounded between Seward and Chenega.
The 47-foot Lieveling lost power and went aground on Cape Puget, about 210 miles north of Kodiak.

Trevon Allridge is charged with first- and second-degree murder in the death of auto mechanic William Schmaus at TreJohn Auto Sales in south Anchorage.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – The size of a large Alaska caribou herd has dropped by more than 50 percent over the last three years and government researchers are trying to understand why.
Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game says the Central Arctic caribou herd hit a peak size of about 70,000 in 2010.
The herd’s numbers fell to about 50,000 in 2013 following a late spring that resulted in a high number of deaths.

Street will be restricted for Governor’s Holiday Open House
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – Juneau police say street restrictions will be in place next week during annual holiday festivities at the Governor’s Mansion.

Alaska law enforcement officials are investigating two suspicious deaths in Soldotna. According to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch posted Monday, two burned bodies were found in a burned-out Ford Bronco that was located off a trail near a Soldotna residence.

President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that seeks to ensure all telephone calls and other communications delivered through a Department of Veterans Affairs’ crisis line get answered in a timely manner by a qualified person.

UAS endowment named for former attorney general Schaible

JUNEAU — The University of Alaska Southeast has created an endowment in the name of former Alaska Attorney General Grace Schaible to support visiting faculty, researchers, artists and Native elders.
The endowment was created following the sale of a home in Juneau that Schaible donated to the university in 1989. The university says visiting scholars and researchers for years stayed at the property along the Mendenhall River.
