‘I Voted’ stickers can mean more than a ballot on Election Day
Emily Carlson/KTVA
While it’s called a “civic duty,” having the freedom to vote is reason enough for some companies to celebrate on Election Day.
Some national and local companies are offering deals and freebies for Alaskans who voted, and for most, all you need is that blue sticker:
BurgerFi – The normally pricier “Conflict Burger” is available for $5 at Anchorage locations when you show off your “I Voted” sticker.

KTVA Weather Lab: Trailside Elementary School
In this week’s KTVA Weather Lab, I visited Trailside Elementary School, where the third graders in Mrs. Cragen and Mrs. Khaki’s classes wanted to know about the tools I use to forecast the weather.
The students discovered what thermometers, anemometers and barometers do and learned all about weather satellites and radar.
I also answered the KTVA Weather Lab Question of the Week: How do tsunamis start?
Every Tuesday, Melissa Frey will take the KTVA Weather Lab to a classroom in o -
Testing students with the Big Wild Life Trivia Contest
The Big Wild Life Trivia contest will test the Alaska knowledge of students from eight middle schools just like Jeopardy.
It’s an extension of the Anchorage School District’s social studies curriculum for seventh graders, according to Julie Saupe of Visit Anchorage.
New this year — the event will be held after school, not during, so parents can cheer on their kids.
The preliminary rounds were held online, which organizers hoped would encourage participation of parents.

Renowned Inupiaq leader Edward Itta dies at 71
ANCHORAGE — Alaskans are mourning the loss of an Inupiaq leader who died Sunday. Edward S. Itta’s death came after an extended struggle with cancer, according to the Inter Circumpolar Council-Alaska (ICC Alaska). He was 71.
“Our condolences go out to his wife Elsie, daughter Muriel, son Price and the rest of his family and friends,” ICC Alaska executive director Kelly Eningowuk said in a statement. “He will be sorely missed by all.”

Lower 48 ivory bans hit Alaska Native carvers

Recent measures to curb elephant poaching in Africa are having unintended consequences in Alaska.
http://media.aprn.org/2016/ann-20161107-06.mp3This July, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s near-total ban on the commercial ivory trade went into effect. At about the same time, state-level bans passed in California, Hawaii, New Jersey and New York, af -
How are Alaska voters feeling? Short answer — divided.
Do Alaskans’ feelings about the presidential candidates line up with national trends? How do they feel about the candidates who want to represent Alaska in Washington, D.C.? Do their feelings on the issues match the candidates they support?
These were all questions KTVA wanted the answers to, so we asked readers on KTVA.com to fill out a 10-question survey on the issues surrounding the 2016 November election. Then, we took to social media and asked our followers on Facebook and Twitter whi -
Stolen skis could mean a quiet winter for Winterberry Charter School students
Many folks in Alaska are looking forward to what winter brings — the excitement and fun of outdoor sports. The students and faculty at Winterberry Charter School were, too — but unless the situation changes quickly, winter will look to them the way it does for many in the Lower 48; long, cold and dark.
Somebody stole their skis.
In August, someone broke into the two sheds on campus and took about 70 pairs of skis. Over the weekend, they made contact with KTVA Sports to help get the w -
