A fishing vessel burned in the Homer Port and Harbor early Thursday morning, Nov. 4.
Harbor Master Bryan Hawkins said the vessel was a total loss.
“It was reported as an explosion and fire. It was aboard a 32-foot fiberglass commercial fishing vessel,” Hawkins said. “It was called in by a private citizen. A familiar face, who lost a write-in campaign to retain his seat, has been appointed to the Skagway Assembly seat vacated by a resignation.
Dan Henry turned in his letter of resignation to the Assembly in October, leaving one of the six chairs vacant.

Just after noon today, Gov. Bill Walker announced he’s been diagnosed with a treatable form of prostate cancer.
He’ll have surgery in December to remove it and does not expect to need post-surgery treatment, he said.

Authorities respond to 10-car accident on highway bridge

ANCHORAGE — Anchorage police and Alaska State Troopers were at the scene of a 10-vehicle accident along a bridge on the Glenn Highway.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says she is unaware of any injuries in the Friday morning accident on the Knik River Bridge.
According to Peters, the roadway is extremely slippery.
She says the incident “looks like a bumper car episode.” -

NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities say a New York City police sergeant has been fatally shot and another has been wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in the Bronx.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) announced the sergeant’s death Friday. He says the other officer was shot in the leg and is undergoing treatment.

2 New York police officers shot, wounded, taken to hospital
NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities say two New York City police officers have been shot and wounded.
A New York Police Department spokeswoman says the injured officers have been taken to a Bronx hospital. She has no information on their conditions.
She says the shooting occurred Friday afternoon in the borough’s Parkchester neighborhood.

A 51-year-old Ketchikan man faces possible charges of third-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance for an alleged marijuana-grow operation.
Rroopers initially went to the residence for a domestic violence investigation, and noticed evidence of a grow operation, according to an Alaska State Troopers online dispatch.
A search warrant was obtained, and troopers seized 38 plants and about 4 ounces of dried marijuana.
That exceeds the amount allowed for personal use under Alaska law. -

Music to vote by, a concert of classic campaign songs
Before the television and radio, presidential campaigns relied on political jingles to capture the ear of voters.
Those songs would be set to popular tunes of the era, but with alternate and catchy lyrics to benefit the prospective candidates.

Police respond to 10 car collision in Mat-Su
The Anchorage Police Department and Alaska State Troopers responded to a 10 car collision on the Knik River Bridge Friday morning.
“Sounds mostly like a bumper car issue, its slippery,” trooper spokesperson Megan Peters said.
She added that there were no reported injuries. According to Peters, Alaska Department of Transportation was expected to send a sand truck.

HOMER — A Soldotna sportfishing guide has been ordered to pay $5,000 and has had his guiding privileges suspended after being charged with illegally taking halibut for himself while on two fishing trips.
Mel Erickson pleaded guilty to two fishing violations Oct. 20, Homer News reports. A judge dismissed 41 other charges against him as part of a plea deal Erickson reached with prosecutors.

The body and wreckage of a missing Alaska bush pilot and his plane were located Thursday morning in the Alaska Range, according to the Alaska National Guard.
In a release from the Guard, spokesperson Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead wrote that the body of David McRae, 55, was recovered and sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office, in Anchorage, Thursday afternoon.
