  A pilot made a safe but sudden landing in South Anchorage Sunday afternoon.
  The pilot, John Kagerer, reported that his engine quit shortly after taking off from Flying Crown Airport, a private runway near the Seward Highway. He was able to find some clear space and landed on some train tracks. Kagerer said his plane was not damaged.

  A collision on Chena Hot Springs Road Saturday afternoon injured two Wisconsin men and claimed the life of 33-year-old Fairbanks resident Michael Dick.
  Alaska State Troopers responded to the scene of the crash near Rifle Road around 12:45 p.m., according to an online troopers dispatch. Two vehicles collided head-on after one of them — a Ford F-150 pickup truck — cross the center line into oncoming traffic.

• Alaska brightens ConocoPhillips earnings report

  Alaska is a bright spot in ConocoPhillips’ third quarter earnings.
  The Alaska Journal of Commerce reports the region was alone in bringing in positive cash flow for a company with third-quarter losses totaling $1.04 billion worldwide.

• Troopers: Plane crash claims life of Wasilla man

  A Wasilla man is dead after the plane he was flying crashed on a dry river bed near Palmer on Saturday.
  The crash was reported to Alaska State Troopers at 2:48 p.m. where the Friday Creek meets the Knik River, according to an online dispatch.
  Ray Justen, 25, was the pilot and only person on board, according to troopers. He was dead when a LifeMed helicopter from Wolf Lake responded around 3:17 p.m.

  University of Alaska Fairbanks police responded to a gunman on campus shortly before midnight Saturday.

  Police say Sgt. Allen Brandt died Friday after complications from surgery the day before.

  Herbal Outfitters’ owner Richard Ballow says his store in Valdez accepted customers as planned Saturday, at “high noon.” He says more than 250 people were waiting in line to get in his shop.

  A New Stuyahok man is in custody after he allegedly threw an elder off of a porch earlier this month, hurting the elder’s head and back.
  Alaska State Troopers arrested 42-year-old Norton Konukpeok Friday after a two week-long investigation into the assault, which occurred on Oct. 13, according to an online dispatch.
