Poor weather and an earlier Easter led to disappointing retail sales for April, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
The trade association reported UK total retail sales were down 4% for the four weeks 31 March to 27 April, compared to a growth of 5.1% the same time last year.
However, noting the calendar change this year, the organisation said the average growth for March and April together was 0.2%, correcting for the distortion created by the earlier timing of Easter.

Mike Ashley settles legal battle with Morgan Stanley following ‘snobbery’ claims
Frasers Group founder Mike Ashley has settled his legal battle with Morgan Stanley after he claimed “snobbery” was behind a $1bn cash demand which threatened to destabilise his empire.
Ashley and the investment bank have reached a settlement following hearings in February, which means no judgement will be passed by the High Court.
The settlement terms remain confidential after a costly trial for both parties.

Clarks CEO Jonathan Ram exits after two years
Clarks chief executive Jonathan Ram has left the business after two years to “pursue other opportunities”.
The footwear retailer said it has formed an interim executive committee to lead the business until it finds a replacement.
Ram joined Clarks in April 2022 from US retailer HanesBrands, where he was the group president of global activewear since 2018.
Prior to that, he spent 16 years at New Balance where he was responsible for the Latin America, EMEA and North American businesses -

The weekend pop up ‘Bed Battle: Team Firm vs Team Soft’ is located at Gallery@Oxo and invites consumers to test out the new collection through several interactive activations to determine which mattress they prefer.
