Mike Ashley settles legal battle with Morgan Stanley following ‘snobbery’ claims
Frasers Group founder Mike Ashley has settled his legal battle with Morgan Stanley after he claimed “snobbery” was behind a $1bn cash demand which threatened to destabilise his empire.
Ashley and the investment bank have reached a settlement following hearings in February, which means no judgement will be passed by the High Court.
The settlement terms remain confidential after a costly trial for both parties.

Clarks CEO Jonathan Ram exits after two years
Clarks chief executive Jonathan Ram has left the business after two years to “pursue other opportunities”.
The footwear retailer said it has formed an interim executive committee to lead the business until it finds a replacement.
Ram joined Clarks in April 2022 from US retailer HanesBrands, where he was the group president of global activewear since 2018.

The Issa brothers borrowed an additional £7m from their petrol stations empire last year to pay for their private jets, new documents have found.
EG Group lent the cash to personal private jet companies controlled by Mohsin and Zuber Issa last year, which are both located offshore in the Isle of Man, The Telegraph reported.

Apple profits dip as iPhone sales weaken
Apple has reported a dip in second quarter profits and sales as demand for its iPhone models weakens across almost all of its markets worldwide.
Profits for the technology retailer slipped 2% to £18.82bn ($23.6bn) in the three months to 30 March, down from £19.2bn ($24.2bn).

Online athleisure brand Tala is teaming up with Selfridgess to take its first step into the physical world with shop-in-shops across its department stores.

The White Company profits rise as shoppers return to high street
The White Company profits and sales have edged up following a shift of customer spend back towards the high street.
Operating profit for the fashion and home retailer rose 4% to £33.5m in the 52 weeks to 29 July, up from £32.3m the year prior. However, on an adjusted basis taking exceptional items into account, profit slipped 3% to £31.9m.

Tesco group customer director Emma Botton has quit the business after more than 7 years.
In an internal memo seen by Marketing Week, it is not clear whether Botton will be directly replaced or whether the supermarket’s marketing team will face its second restructure in less than 12 months.

Asda pushes debt into next decade after £3.2bn deal
Asda has pushed its debt burdens into the next decade after refinancing more than £3.2bn of debt.
The supermarket said the deal has postponed the majority of its maturities past 2030 and included the biggest sterling high-yield bond this year.

Mango has revealed plans to open more than 20 new stores this year as it looks to bolster its presence in the UK.
The Spanish fashion retailer’s will grow its footprint in London and Scotland, as well as open in selected cities in Northern Ireland, central and southern England for the first times.

Frasers Group puts 160 Studio Retail warehouse jobs at risk
Frasers Group is making cuts at its Studio Retail staff based in East Lancashire following weak sales.
The retail giant has entered a consultation period for over 160 workers at the retailer’s base in Accrington, Drapers reported.

Poor weather and early Easter hit retail footfall for April
Footfall across retail plunged in April, as poor weather and an earlier run-up to Easter took its toll.
Total UK shopper visitors fell 7.2% last month, down from a 1.3% decline in March, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported.
Shopping centres were the hardest hit destinations, with a 7.2% drop in April, according to the trade association.
High street shopper numbers plummeted almost 7% while retail park footfall was down 6.2% for the period.
