    GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Two backcountry skiers were caught in an avalanche in Garfield County on Tuesday afternoon. One did not survive and the other had to be rescued.

    The snow slide happened near Sheriff’s Reservoir in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area in Garfield County about 40 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs.

    DENVER (CBS4) – The temperature at Denver International Airport hit 67 degrees at 3:16 p.m. Wednesday which broke the record high for Feb. 15 set 31 years ago.
    Denver’s average temperature for the first two weeks of February was 41 degrees, which is nearly 10 degrees above normal.
    According to the National Centers for Environmental Prediction 298 record high temperatures were either tied or broken in Colorado during the first 13 days of February.

    Colorado Has 834 Million Dead Trees, Fires Could Get Worse
    DENVER (AP) – Foresters say Colorado has about 834 million standing dead trees, threatening to worsen wildfires and degrade vital water supplies that flow from forested mountains.
    The Colorado State Forest Service said Wednesday the number of dead trees has risen nearly 30 percent in seven years.
    They are most visible in forests infested by the mountain pine beetle and the spruce beetle, which have together attacked more than 7,900 square miles in Colorado.

    BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) – A former elementary school teacher has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two students.
    Gilbert Trujillo assaulted the young girls between 2004 and 2011 when he taught third, fourth and fifth graders at Dupont Elementary School.
