• Troopers: 55-year-old man struck by Jeep while crossing Parks Highway dies

  A 55-year-old man was killed Friday night after a Jeep Grand Cherokee struck him in Wasilla, Alaska State Troopers report.
  The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his family, was crossing the Parks Highway near mile 49, according to an online trooper dispatch. Troopers were responded to the crash scene shortly before 11 p.m.
  “The male was crossing in an area the does not have crosswalks and does not have roadway lighting,” troopers noted in the dispatch.

• ‘They’re afraid of you’: Bethel judge rejects plea deal for jailbreak suspect

  On Thursday at the Bethel Courthouse, Dale Thomas Fancyboy was sentenced to five years in prison for theft and assault after being convicted of breaking into a jail, holding guards at gunpoint and then stealing a snowmobile to escape. This sentence comes after the presiding judge rejected a deal that would have let Fancyboy out with half the time and more probation. The judge has also taken a dim view of earlier plea deals, according to a story published by KYUK Public Media.

• Alaska’s rejection of onsite pot use at stores gets murky

  Alaska marijuana regulators thought they had snuffed out onsite use of marijuana at retail pot shops, but there may be an ember left.
  On Thursday, the Marijuana Control Board rejected rules that would have let people buy marijuana products in authorized stores and go into separate store areas to partake.
  But board staff on Friday issued a clarification, saying that if retail stores have board-approved marijuana consumption operating plans, they might be valid.

• Two vehicles burned on the same Anchorage street overnight

  The Anchorage Fire Department is investigating two vehicle fires that happened early Friday morning on the same South Anchorage street.
  Fire Investigator Brian Dean said firefighters were called to a report of a chevy pick-up on fire in the 8500 block of Blackberry St., just west of Dimond High School at around 3:45 a.m.
  A short time later they responded to another fire, just two blocks away on the same street.

• Juneau man indicted on 40 counts of sexual abuse of a minor, pornography

  A Juneau man faces new charges for allegedly possessing child pornography as well as the refiling of previous charges alleging sexual abuse of a minor.
  A Juneau grand jury on Wednesday handed up a 40 count indictment against 22-year-old Ty Grussendorf.
  He was indicted on nine counts of sexual abuse of a minor and one count of attempted sexual abuse of a minor. They allege separate incidents with a 12-year-old child and a 14-year-old child in 2013.

• Alaska woman claims powerlifting record, squatting 578.7 pounds

  Bethel native Natalie Hanson can add her name to the record books once again.
  Last weekend at a competition in Milwaukee, she set the American women’s powerlifting record by squatting 578.7 pounds.
  “Yeah, it’s heavy,” Hanson laughed. “I hit that number in training and it was not easy so to crush it in the meet. It felt good.”
