• No injuries among four Juneau people rescued on Friday

  Two hikers were rescued Friday after they got stuck on a ledge off the West Glacier Trail.
  The Alaska State Troopers reported in an online dispatch that they asked the Coast Guard to use a helicopter to pick them up and take them back to the Juneau airport. Juneau Mountain Rescue was initially dispatched, but could not safely arrive at the scene because of terrain and weather conditions.

• New Year’s Day fire destroys two Unalaska buildings

  Two abandoned buildings were destroyed by a fire at Agnes Beach in Unalaska on New Year’s Day.
  The blaze also damaged two other structures and disrupted traffic on Airport Beach and Captain’s Bay roads.
  The Unalaska Department of Public Safety said the fire has been controlled.

  The Museum of the Aleutians has wrapped up the year by hiring a new executive director.
  Virginia Hatfield will step into her new position Jan. 3.
  Hatfield, an archaeologist, moves up from her role as collections manager.
  She replaces Neal Hitch who reopened the museum this summer.
  It had been closed for nearly a year, following the resignation of the previous director when items from the collection were found in her home.

• Fog advisory extended for Anchorage, Matanuska Valley

  ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The Anchorage Office of Emergency Management says a dense fog advisory has been extended for Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley.
  The office says fog will persist through Tuesday afternoon.
  That office warns that visibility will be a quarter-mile or less at times and that drivers should use headlights at all times.
  Fog began in Anchorage on Monday afternoon.
  The advisory is in place through 3 p.m. Tuesday.

• Car stolen with child inside sparks debate over Alaska laws

  There’s a heated debate this winter about whether it’s ever okay to leave children unattended in a vehicle, after a car with a 3-year-old inside was stolen Sunday.
