On Friday, writer Kelly Oxford shared the story of the first time she was sexually assaulted. She was 12, she said, when a man on a city bus grabbed her genitals and smiled.
She used the same word that Republican candidate Donald Trump used in a recording where he talked about doing things to women.
“Women: tweet me your first assaults,” Oxford said: “they aren’t just stats.”

Obama really wants people to live on Mars
via ktoo.org
For years, President Obama has been saying the U.S. must send humans to Mars. Permanently.
There was the 2010 speech when he said, “By the mid-2030s, I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it.”
There was that time in 2012 when he said the Curiosity rover was inspiring kids to tell “their moms and dads they want to be part of a Mars mission — maybe even the first person -
Groups sue to declare Fairbanks air out of compliance
Two Alaska groups want the Environmental Protection Agency to formally declare that Fairbanks is seriously out of compliance with federal air pollution standards.
Citizens for Clean Air and the Sierra Club on Tuesday sued the EPA, claiming the agency missed a June deadline for declaring the Fairbanks North Star Borough a “serious non-attainment area.”
That designation would kick in stricter pollution control requirements.
The EPA in November 2009 designated Fairbanks a moderate a non -
Murkowski, Sullivan resign GOP posts after denouncing Trump
Alaska’s two U.S. senators resigned leadership posts in the state Republican party in denouncing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Robert Dillon, a spokesman for Sen. Lisa Murkowski, says Murkowski and Sen. Dan Sullivan voluntarily resigned over the weekend as honorary members of the party’s state central committee.
Murkowski on Saturday called on Trump to step aside as the party’s nominee after a 2005 video surfaced in which Trump made lewd comments about women. Sullivan, -
What to do if you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 7
NEW YORK — Worries about the safety of Samsung’s replacement Galaxy Note 7 smartphones have consumers fretting about what to do.
U.S. regulators ordered a recall of the original Note 7, a large phone, bordering on tablet size, with a huge battery, in late September after the devices demonstrated an unwelcome tendency to catch fire.
Now, following reports that the company’s replacement versions have also overheated or caught fire, Samsung announced Monday evening that it is -
Drug crisis boosts supply of organ transplants
The spike America has seen in drug overdose deaths in recent years has provided an unexpected lifesaving benefit for others by increasing the number of desperately needed organ transplants.
So far this year, 12 percent of deceased organ donors in the U.S. died of drug intoxication, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) — 791 out of a total of 6,557. That’s more than the number who died of gunshot wounds.
While the percentage of organ donations from people -
After Hurricane Matthew, Floodwaters Rise To Record Levels In North Carolina
via ktoo.org
When Hurricane Matthew lost strength and headed out to sea over the weekend, the storm took its high winds and driving rains with it.
But it left behind water — from the record rains that fell during its trip up the southeastern U.S. coast. And particularly in North Carolina, the long-gone storm has continued to threaten lives as floodwaters rise, sometimes to record levels, flowing over the banks of rivers and threatening dams.
The hurricane killed hundreds of people in Haiti and elsewher -
Travel Tuesday: Advantages to traveling during off-season
If the last two weeks have been any indication, it can prove to bring some pretty nice weather to southcentral. October is the month the tourist start to thin out. Combine the two, and it’s a great time for Alaskans to get out during the off-season to explore Alaska or beyond.
Tuesday, Julie Saupe, the president and CEO of Visit Anchorage joined Daybreak with five benefits of traveling now.
For more information, click here.

Recount shows Skagway senior center bond passing by 5 votes
via ktoo.org
A recount of Skagway municipal election ballots Monday shows the senior center bond question passing by five votes.
The Canvass Board counted 228 votes for the $6 million bond and 223 against. Those results are just slightly different than the initial ballot count last week.
The board tallied one more “for” vote in the recount.
Borough Clerk Emily Deach said that sometimes happens if the mark on the ballot is too light for the machine.
The borough assembly ordered the recount because -
Juneau Access Road, PFD on Haines and Skagway minds leading up to Walker visit
via ktoo.org
This week, Haines and Skagway residents will have the chance to tell Alaska Gov. Bill Walker their thoughts on the Juneau Access Road and state budget situation.
Walker is making brief stops in each community Friday.
His staff said its part of a slate of visits around the state to talk to communities about the Alaska’s fiscal outlook. But Walker will also hear from residents in this area about the Juneau Access Project.
Walker is venturing to two of the three communities that would be -
Recipe Box: Egg-in-the-Hole
If breakfast really sets the tone for the rest of the day, why stick to the mundane?
This week, KTVA 11’s Daybreak is packing protein into a fun meal for the kiddos, with the help of Anchorage mom Lesleigh Frank.
Egg-in-the-Hole is one of Frank’s favorite meals from her childhood. But this version has an Alaska twist. Instead of using an old-fashioned biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, animal-shaped cookie cutters allow the chance for her toddler, Waverley, to join in the bre -
‘We Are Better Than That’: Clinton Sees An Opening In Voters Turned Off By Trump
via ktoo.org
Hillary Clinton, who has long been public enemy No. 1 for many in the Republican Party, is now making a direct appeal to Republican and independent voters turned off by Donald Trump.
For months, her campaign has been courting these voters, but as Clinton and her team see it, the events of the past week have given them a much wider opening. Her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, is in open warfare with members of his own party and is still reeling from the release of a 2005 video where he boasted -
Petersburg Indian Association pursues new one-mile trail near town
via ktoo.org
The proposed trail is just in the initial stages and would likely take years to complete.
According to the proposal, the trail would link the south part of town to the airport area without going through downtown Petersburg. The proposal would open up opportunities for the area residences of Severson Subdivision.
“In Petersburg we have beautiful scenery, a ton of space that is unused at this point that people would love to take advantage of,” said Barry Morrison is the Council Pr -
Thief makes off with trailer used as mobile pretzel parlor
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – It’s a twisted crime: Someone stole the Pretzel Chef trailer, a food truck that operates in Fairbanks, Alaska.
