• Since 2008, number of UAS students using disability services quintuple

  The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, requires institutions receiving public money, including colleges, provide a level playing field for students who have disabilities.
  In 2008, the act was amended to expand the definition of disability. That fall, 23 University of Alaska Southeast students were using disability services.   A youth detention center in Ketchikan is closing due to the state’s ongoing budget problems and a low residency rate. The Ketchikan Daily News reports that over the past decade the Ketchikan Regional Youth Facility has had an average daily population of four youths.

• 1 killed in plane crash near Anchorage

  Authorities say at least one person has died in the fiery crash of a single-engine plane at an airport northeast of Anchorage. KTVA reports that Anchorage Assistant Fire Chief Erich Scheunemann said two people were reported to be on the plane when it crashed Saturday afternoon at Birchwood Airport. Anchorage Police Chief Chris Tolley said one death had been confirmed.
