• Police investigate dynamite blast in Sitka

  Authorities are investigating reports of an illegal dynamite blast in Sitka that caused damage to one home.
  The Sitka Sentinel reports that police had received calls about the explosion at Granite Creek quarry Monday evening. City Administrator Mark Gorman said he received an email from a property owner the following day reporting that her home’s foundation and walls were cracked by the shock.

  Kotzebue’s fire chief is appearing in court Thursday after being arrested Saturday and being charged with driving under the influence.
  According to a press release from Kotzebue’s Police Department, 36-year-old Sean Ralston was driving the city’s fire chief vehicle when an officer stopped him outside his home.

• Car runs into children in Mendenhall Valley, 12-year-old hospitalized

  Juneau police are investigating a car-versus-pedestrian accident in the Mendenhall Valley that put a 12-year-old in the hospital.
  Police say in a press release the accident was reported at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Mendenhall Loop Road and Tongass Boulevard.
  Police say a 36 year-old man was driving a 2008 Toyota Highlander toward the Mendenhall Glacier. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a culvert, crossed Tongass Boulevard, and came to rest on its side.

  A woman died in state custody early Wednesday morning. Staff at the Anchorage Correctional Complex found 48-year-old Laurel Christine Hunter unresponsive in her cell at 2:27 AM.   Anchorage police are classifying a weekend shooting as murder/attempted suicide.The shooting happened late Saturday in the Mountain View neighborhood.
  Police say Cher Lor shot and killed Pang Xiong inside an apartment they shared before turning the gun on himself.

• Body of missing Fairbanks boy found in river

  Alaska State Troopers say the body of a missing 4-year-old Fairbanks boy has been found inside a fish wheel in the Chena River.Troopers said they were notified shortly after noon Tuesday that Owen Yoakum had left his home without his family noticing. Troopers say the family was worried the boy might have gone toward the river, which is close to the family’s home.
