  The number of people in California who tested positive for COVID-19 at the beginning of March was ten. By the end of the month, that number had ballooned to 8,155, according to the California Department of Public Health.
  The department started reporting daily updates early in the month, with the biggest jump on the last day of March, when 1,223 cases were reported. Divided over 24 hours, that turns out to be about 51 cases per hour.

  NEW ORLEANS— Ellis Marsalis Jr., the jazz pianist, teacher and patriarch of a New Orleans musical clan, died late Wednesday after battling pneumonia brought on by the new coronavirus, leaving six sons and a deep legacy. He was 85.

• Bicyclist fatally struck by SUV in Huntington Beach

  HUNTINGTON BEACH — A bicyclist was struck by an SUV and killed in Huntington Beach and an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash.
  The accident occurred near Yorktown Avenue and Vasile Circle about 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to Sgt. Eric Warken of the Huntington Beach Police Department.
  Officers arrived on scene and found a man in the street, unresponsive. He suffered major internal injuries and was pronounced dead, Warken said.
