    GARDEN GROVE — Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire in a Buddhist temple in Garden Grove early Wednesday morning, but not before the blaze caused nearly a half-million dollars in damage.

    NEWPORT BEACH — A young St. Anthony boys soccer team got a taste of the playoffs on Tuesday night in a Division 6 wild-card game at Sage Hill.

    Even as people of different political stripes begin to agree more and more on criminal-justice issues — including overly long sentences and the possibility of rehabilitation — they agree most on the clearest fact about our jails and prisons: Too many inmates are there for the non-crime of being mentally ill.
    Long ago, for what seemed the good reason of not allowing society to wrongly confine too many mere misfits or eccentrics, California’s mental hospitals were de-emphasized.
