  • Aleutian Islands Pacific cod harvest level down 42 percent

    Last week Alaska Fish and Game set the Pacific cod guideline harvest level (GHL) for the fishing season that began on Jan. 1.
    Dutch Harbor Fish and Game biologist Justin Leon says the 2016 numbers are a big change from last year.
    “We’ve just released this coming year’s GHL for the harvest that’s going to be allowed for the Aleutian Islands Subdistrict, and that is going to be 10,476,259 pounds. It’s down 42 percent from last year,” Leon said.

  • Tobacco shop owners arrested in synthetic drug investigation

    The owners of a tobacco shop and a Soldotna man are facing charges related to an investigation into the synthetic drug known as spice.
    The Peninsula Clarion reports Philip and Loren Kneeland were arraigned Thursday before Magistrate Jennifer Wells at the Kenai Courthouse. Temporary defense lawyer Eric Derleth entered not-guilty pleas for the couple.
    Police arrested 27-year-old William Dooley in connection with the case. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney.

    Federal, state and local agencies haven’t found any major obstacles to a plan to build a hydroelectric dam on Sweetheart Creek southeast of Juneau.
    The Juneau Empire reports that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released a draft environment impact for the project in October. Tuesday was the last day for officials and the public to give feedback on the document.

    A 3-year-old in Stebbins was accidentally killed on New Year’s Eve after being run over by a truck, according to a dispatch from Alaska State Troopers.
