• Alaskans win video contest, trip to Norway

    A lifelong Alaskan and a relative newcomer to the state combined forces recently to make a short film called Arctic Contrast, winning a video contest sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy in DC.
    Laureli Ivanoff is from Unalakleet and was the news firector at KNOM in Nome when Ben Matheson went to work for her as a reporter in 2010. Matheson said the embassy wanted to showcase the Arctic for those who haven’t seen it.

    Wage Increase Kicks In January 1
    In 2014 Alaskans voted for one-dollar increases to go into effect in 2015 and 2016. The first, raised it from $7.75 per hour, to $8.75. The second, to $9.75 an hour goes into effect January 1, 2016.
    Joe Dunham is statewide supervising investigator of wage and hour administration at the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Affected jobs include some in fish processing, fast food, and home health care, he said.

    AK Supreme Court Rejects Set Net Initiative
    The Alaska Supreme Court has rejected a proposed ballot initiative that sought to ban commercial shore gill nets and set nets in urban, non-subsistence areas.
    The decision reverses a 2014 lower court ruling that ordered that the initiative be certified by the lieutenant governor, who had previously declined to certify it. The measure had been slated to appear on the 2016 ballot.

    According to the Russian media outlet Port News, a Russian icebreaker has just completed the fastest transit of the Northern Sea Route. Along with setting the speed record, the icebreaker also completed the trip over a month after the shipping season usually ends in the Arctic. But it’s still a long ways off from becoming the next great trade route.

    A state health department official says that since the state expanded Medicaid to cover more lower-income Alaskans on Sept. 1, about 7,700 people have enrolled.
