    Researchers say less Arctic sea ice means more precipitation
    A research paper published Monday by U.S. and Canadian scientists says less sea ice in the Arctic has meant more precipitation is falling.
    Lead author Ben Kopec, of Dartmouth College, says researchers looked at 20 years of precipitation data at sites in the Canadian Arctic and the Greenland Sea.
    They measured isotope compositions to determine whether moisture originated in the Arctic or from lower latitudes.

    Anchorage police say a dispute during a drug transaction preceded the shooting deaths of two men Monday on the city’s west side.
    Police at 12:30 a.m. took calls reporting shots fired and a vehicle chasing another on west Tudor Road.

    Calista Corporation has awarded nearly $290,000 in scholarships this year to Alaskan university students, according to a company press release.
    For the fall semester, more than 300 students from across the Calista region applied for the funds.

    Most areas in Southeast closed to commercial fall fishing for Dungeness crab on Nov. 30.
    The State has crunched the numbers and the season was below average in both harvest and participation.
    First, the numbers. The harvest was 547,000 pounds. That’s less than the five-year average of 715,000 pounds. This fall’s harvest is 17 percent of the year’s total harvest which is about 5 percent less than what it’s been recently.

    The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly adopted three ordinances Monday that put local regulations in place for any future marijuana business in the borough.
    The first two ordinances passed unanimously and with little discussion. One establishes the Assembly as the local regulatory body to review any marijuana business license applications. The state is scheduled to start accepting those applications in late February.

    A light plane made a forced landing on the Seward Highway near Girdwood on Monday, closing the highway for about 15 minutes. The pilot of the plane was injured, according to Alaska State Troopers.
