Why Water Enters Your Nose or Mouth While Breathing in Freestyle
via swimswam.com
By Sanuj Srivastava on SwimSwam
One of the most common complaints from beginner swimmers is, “Water keeps going into my nose or mouth whenever I try to breathe.”
As a coach, I see this mistake almost every day at my pool. Most beginners hold their breath underwater and then try to exhale and inhale at the same time after their mouth comes out of the water. This leaves them with very little time to breathe, causing them to rush the movement and often inhale water instead of air.

Why Strong Glutes Improve Underwater Dolphin Kick Speed
via swimswam.com
By Olivier Poirier-Leroy on SwimSwam
One of the biggest mistakes I made over the years was treating the dolphin kick purely like a leg extension exercise.
I obsessed over the downkick and how hard I could drive it with my quads and knees.
Naturally, this meant endless reps on the leg extension machine at the gym. Leg up, leg down. Move that weight stack.
But not a lot of great dolphin kicking broke out as a result of this training. Turns out, this was only solving part of the challenge.

The kick’s role in sprinting is interesting in that power output actually goes down as swimmers start flirting with maximal speed.
Why?
When you’re sprinting with a six-beat kick and your arms are white-water turning over at full speed, there’s less time to generate force with each kic -
