As the stock market grinds its way to yet another series of record highs, it's easy to assume that it's just been business as usual, with tech companies blazing the trail.
But under the surface, the leaders of the market have been churning, with the dominant forces in the benchmark S&P 500 giving way to lesser-loved areas.
And as the market has turned over, dislocations have popped up, creating opportunities for investors in an environment that's been largely starved of price swings.

MORGAN STANLEY: These niche coffee chains could be the next Starbucks (SBUX)
Morgan Stanley on Wednesday said that Starbucks' stranglehold on the high-end coffee market is here to stay, despite some big names getting into the business.
"Given the increasing importance of super premium chains to the category, investors--both public and private--are paying closer attention," analyst John Glass said in a note.
"Many of the high profile artisanal 'Third Wave' coffee brands have yet to develop significant footprints relative to Starbucks, and most highlighted here are highly -
Trump's tax plan champions 'pass-through' businesses that helped fuel the rise of the 1%
President Donald Trump rose to power by painting himself as a political outsider who, despite his own wealth, would stand with working Americans against Wall Street and other big-money interests.
Instead, not only has Trump packed his Cabinet with bankers and rich corporate chieftains, but he is also pitching a tax cut plan that the administration is billing as helping the middle class but that most independent experts say is heavily tilted toward the wealthy.
Look no further than Trum -
What keeps a $1.1 trillion money manager awake at night
We’re in uncharted territory.
As the Fed begins to shrink its balance sheet and put an end to so-called quantitative easing — the policy move credited with helping the United States rebound from the financial crisis — investors are nervous a mistake could upend markets.
“One of the things that always keeps up at night is the risk of a policy mistake,” Mike Ryan, CIO of UBS Wealth Management Americas, told Business Insider in a recent interview.
Ryan emphasized uncer -
Deutsche Bank is pulling a Silicon Valley move and unleashing its code onto Wall Street
Deutsche Bank is pulling a Silicon Valley move.
The German bank, which is one of the last big financial firms based in the historic heart of New York finance near Wall Street, announced on Wednesday it will open a large swath of computer code for one of its platforms to the public.
"The bank will put over 150,000 lines of code from its award-winning electronic platform Autobahn into the public domain so that trading applications from different providers can use it as a shar -
Investors once seen at risk of extinction are headed for their best year since the financial crisis
Even amid the rise of so-called robo-investors and passive strategies, good old-fashioned stock pickers are continuing to prove their worth.
About 54% of large-cap mutual-fund managers are beating their benchmarks in 2017, the highest-ever success rate at this time of year, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch data going back to 2009. If they keep up the pace through the end of the quarter, it would be the first year since 2007 — right around the time of the financial crisis — -
Tom Brady is the Apple of the NFL — 7 quarterbacks and their tech company equivalents (AAPL, APRN, TSLA, TWTR, BABA, AMZN, FB)
Tech companies and NFL quarterbacks have a surprising amount in common.
While tech stocks carry outsize influence, often dictating the direction of the whole market, professional football teams are also at the whim of their signal-callers. The market would crash if tech stocks started failing — the dot-com bubble anyone? — just in the way an injury to an NFL team's starting quarterback usually spells certain disaster.
Now, as the NFL season kicks off, many casual football fans are tr -
A handful of Wall Street titans are increasingly upending boardrooms of the largest companies the world
A handful of billionaire Wall Street titans are increasingly making life miserable for corporate boards of the largest companies in the world.
Activist investors are targeting fewer companies than in recent years, but the most powerful among them are setting their sights on ever larger trophies and deploying capital at a record clip in 2017.
Through the first three quarters, activists plowed $45 billion into 124 new campaigns targeting companies whose market capitalization exceeds -
Someone dressed up as the Monopoly man is trolling the ex-Equifax CEO's hearing in Congress
Richard Smith, the beleaguered ex-CEO of Equifax, spent the past 24 hours getting battered by lawmakers in testimony about the consumer data giant's massive security breach.
Wednesday marked his second day of testimony in front of Congress, and life's not getting any easier.
During the testimony, one enterprising attendee of the Senate hearing is trolling Smith, sitting behind him in the gallery wearing a top hat, bushy white mustache, and a monocle.
The attendee, a campaig -
'Blade Runner 2049' wins the weekend box office but shockingly underperforms
Despite an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which included some critics saying it surpassed its legendary original in every aspect, "Blade Runner 2049" was not the moneymaker its studio, Warner Bros, or the industry had anticipated.
Though the movie easily won the domestic weekend box office with an estimated $31.5 million take, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it's a disappointing figure for a blockbuster that was on over 4,000 screens and a budget of $150 million (add another $100 million or -

Hedge funds are turning their backs on tech stocks
My how the tide has turned for tech stocks.
Until recently, the industry was viewed as the indispensable driver of the equity market. Companies like the so-called FANG group — which includes Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google — received loads of credit for pushing stock indexes to new records.
Now the shoe is on the other foot, with hedge funds and other large speculators the most bearish in 16 months on the tech sector, Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show.

Short seller Andrew Left says he's found a 'business dirtier than Herbalife'
Andrew Left is back at it again.
The Citron Research founder tweeted on Wednesday that the Canadian e-commerce company Shopify was a "business dirtier than Herbalife."
He also posted a seven-minute YouTube video outlining his bear case, titled "Citron Exposes the Dark Side of Shopify — The FTC Will Take Notice," and posted a report to his firm's website.
