Fed officials haven't stopped holding private meetings even after a criminal probe into leaks
On March 23, Federal Reserve vice chair Stanley Fischer was the keynote speaker at a Brookings Institution dinner in Washington, DC.There, he gave prepared remarks on regulatory policy and the Fed's response to the financial crisis and took questions from the audience on the highly market-sensitive topic of interest rate policy.Federal Reserve officials give speeches all the time. What makes this one notable is that it was closed to the public, Fischer's prepared comments have not been made -
There's a simple economic reason why the United Airlines incident happened — and why it will probably happen again (UAL)
United Airlines has a bit of a mess on its hands, and there's a simple economic reason as to why.
The airline is in hot water after a passenger was dragged from a United Airlines flight for refusing to give up his seat.
United's stock has fallen on Tuesday after a video of the incident caused an uproar on social media.
While the incident may seem like a perfect storm of social media outrage and empathetic understanding after a customer service disaster (not to mention s -
UNDERCOVER IN AN IPHONE FACTORY: What it's really like to work in a Chinese mega-factory, according to a student who spent 6 weeks there (AAPL)
Imagine going to work at 7:30 every night and spending the next 12 hours, including meals and breaks, inside a factory where your only job is to insert a single screw into the back of a smartphone, repeating the task over and over and over again.
During the day, you sleep in a shared dorm room, and in the evening, you wake up and start all over again.
That's the routine that Dejian Zeng experienced when he spent six weeks working at an iPhone factory near Shanghai, China, last summer. And it's s -
DALIO: There's not going to be another 2008-style crash, but there will be 'a gradual noose tightening'
Ray Dalio, the founder of the world's largest hedge fund firm Bridgewater Associates, says investors shouldn't expect another crisis like that in 2008 – but that there is still going to be "a gradual noose tightening."
Dalio made the comments in an interview with Business Insider's global editor in chief Henry Blodget on The Bottom Line, Business Insider's new weekly business news show. You can watch the full interview here.
"It's not like 2007, 2008," Dalio said. "In 2008, we c -

Berkshire Hathaway, the largest owner of United Continental Holdings shares, lost up to $58.5 million as the stock fell on Tuesday.
That's a lot of money for most of us, but not for Warren Buffett, Berkshire's chairman, who is worth $75 billion according to Bloomberg.

United's shares fell by up to 4% as a vi -
Tesla shares could go higher — but investors shouldn't get overconfident (TSLA)
Over the past two weeks, Tesla has shattered its previous trading peaks and surged even higher. The carmaker, which has only been around for a decade and sells less than 100,000 vehicles per year, now has a bigger market cap than General Motors and Ford.
Much of the gains has been notched since early this year, when Tesla rallied based on pretty much nothing. Some analysts have pointed to first-quarter deliveries that came in at about 25,000 vehicles, putting Tesla on a path to sell roughly 15,0 -
'The Fate of the Furious' could make $400 million over the weekend and top 'Furious 7'
March holdovers "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Boss Baby" are the only things keeping the Hollywood box office afloat right now, so Universal's "The Fate of the Furious" couldn't come at a better time.
The eighth movie in the "Fast and Furious" franchise (opening Friday), with wall-to-wall hype, is projected to take in major coin over the weekend, and it could even top the unprecedented success of "Furious 7." Estimates range between $380 million and $400 million worldwide, according to Va -
Bitcoin is spiking
Bitcoin is up 1.3% at $1,227 a coin as traders move into the cryptocurrency amid a scramble for safety. Tuesday's bid comes following rising political tensions in the Middle East and on the Korean Peninsula which caused a steep sell off in risk assets. While those assets have clawed back their losses, bitcoin and other plays like the yen are holding onto their gains.
Tuesday's advance has the cryptocurrency trading at its best level since March 16, the day before worrie -
Trump just said small businesses were 'unable to borrow from banks' — but small-business owners disagree
In a meeting with some of the most powerful CEOs in the world on Tuesday, President Donald Trump argued that small businesses were struggling to find financing.
"So many people come to see me — I see them all the time — small businesses that are unable to borrow from banks," Trump said. "They never had a problem five, six, seven, 10 years ago. They had great bankers, great relationships, now they can't borrow."
The president blamed the post-financial-crisis Dodd-Frank banking regula -

The Japanese yen is climbing.
The yen is up by 1.1% at 109.70 per dollar as of 10:59 a.m. ET. It was up by just 0.3% at 110.62 per dollar earlier in the morning.

Stocks are sliding
U.S. stocks edged lower on Tuesday as rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Korean peninsula pushed investors to safe-haven assets such as gold.
The White House said on Monday President Donald Trump was open to authorizing additional strikes on Syria if its government uses chemical weapons again or deploys barrel bombs, while North Korea warned of a nuclear attack on the United States if provoked as a U.S. Navy strike group moved towards the western Pacific.

GOLDMAN SACHS: Hedge funds might finally have something to be happy about (GS)
Hedge funds have taken a beating over the past few years. Several big name funds have shut down, and performance in many cases has been underwhelming.
But, Goldman Sachs just noticed a small glimmer of hope.
Last quarter, investors added more money to hedge funds than they took out, according to a private client survey that the bank compiled. It was the first time in over a year that funds saw net inflows.
The uptick is nothing big: about $2.8 billion, or 1.09% of assets co -

Dialog Semiconductor plunges after analyst warns Apple may use fewer of its chips
Dialog Semiconductor shares fell by as much as 16% on Tuesday after an analyst warned that Apple may use fewer of the company's chips in the iPhone.

Ed Pilkington: Specialists, not brand managers, are the future of marketing
One of the hottest topics around seems to be how to construct a marketing department in an age of such rapid change. We hear lots of debate around generalists and specialists and what the right balance is. One thing is for sure: the old model has gone and there isn’t a perfect new model. Evolution and change will be key.
When building a department you have to go back to what you want to achieve, and then work out how to deliver that. In a world of change it is interesting that the core el -
