Tesco group customer director Emma Botton steps down
Tesco group customer director Emma Botton has quit the business after more than 7 years.
In an internal memo seen by Marketing Week, it is not clear whether Botton will be directly replaced or whether the supermarket’s marketing team will face its second restructure in less than 12 months.
Tesco chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad told colleagues he would “share more information shortly in relation to how [the business] will lead [its] customer marketing agenda”.

Asda pushes debt into next decade after £3.2bn deal
Asda has pushed its debt burdens into the next decade after refinancing more than £3.2bn of debt.
The supermarket said the deal has postponed the majority of its maturities past 2030 and included the biggest sterling high-yield bond this year.
It noted that it was also the second-largest sterling bond in the European leveraged finance market – only behind its original £2.25bn sterling bond tranches in 2021.

The Works completes switch from main market to AIM
The Works has completed its move from the main market on the London Stock Exchange to its sub-market AIM.
The specialist retailer, which first listed on the stock exchange in July 2018, had cited its poor valuation, financial cost and regulatory burden of being on the main market as reasons for the change and noted “that AIM is a more appropriate” for the business.

Poor weather and early Easter hit retail footfall for April
Footfall across retail plunged in April, as poor weather and an earlier run-up to Easter took its toll.
Total UK shopper visitors fell 7.2% last month, down from a 1.3% decline in March, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported.

Asda is launching new price cuts on 126 essential items worth £70m as part of its ongoing efforts to lower prices for customers.

Aldi’s market share slips as sales growth slows
Aldi’s market share has fallen behind where it was a year ago as shoppers head back to the traditional supermarkets for their groceries.
The latest data from NIQ shows sales at the discounter rose just 1.3% in the 12 weeks to April 20, in comparison to the 6.6% jump in sales at Sainsbury’s and 5.8% at Tesco.
