    Severe flooding in North Carolina follows Matthew’s departure; death toll climbs

    WILMINGTON, N.C. — Hurricane Matthew’s torrential rains triggered severe flooding in North Carolina on Sunday as the deteriorating storm made its exit to the sea, and thousands of people had to be rescued from their homes and cars. The death toll in the U.S. climbed to at least 16, nearly half of them in North Carolina.

    Residents are being advised that Kenai River water levels are rising into next week.
    The Peninsula Clarion reports that a release last week from the Skilak Glacier Dammed Lake is pushing the water level higher.
    National Weather Service Anchorage hydrologist Crane Johnson said an alert was issued to inform people in the area.
    He said now is the time to take precautions like moving items to higher ground.

    The Coast Guard reported a boat operator fell asleep Saturday morning and ran his vessel aground in Peril Strait.
    The strait is south of Chichagof Island and north of Sitka. Officials said four people were aboard the 41-foot recreational vessel Pirate Son.

    3 police officers shot in Palm Springs
    The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) in southern California says three of its officers were shot Saturday afternoon.
    The condition of those officers was not immediately known, according to a statement from PSPD.
    Dozens of law enforcement officers responded to the area of Cypress and Del Lago Roads in Palm Springs around 2 p.m. to conduct a manhunt, The Desert Sun, a local news agency, reports.
