His dissent had played an essential role in his ascen -

In the halcyon days of their youth, Garrett Marchbanks and Pierce Brown would imagine what it would be like to race their motorcycles in Rice-Eccles Stadium.Marchbanks, from Coalville, and Brown, of Sandy, would join their dads, and the masses, at the AMA Supercross races whenever they roared into the University of Utah campus. For months afterward, the boys would gather at a dirt track and pretend they were there, riding in front of tens of thousands of fans, including all their friends and fam -

Camping in the West? Like everything these days, it’s complicated.
In the West, cabin-feverish parents yearning to take their children into the woods, couples trying to escape quarantine pods, and all campers who miss their beloved outdoors will this summer find a complicated camping landscape, one of new and conflicting laws, closings and reopenings, and strict requirements on social-distancing and hand-washing.When the pandemic hit the United States in mid-March, Western states shut down in a staggered fashion, leading to the unprecedented closure of national -
State Legislatures are slow to pass laws limiting use of force
Columbus, Ohio • A wave of police killings of young black men in 2014 prompted 24 states to quickly pass some type of law enforcement reform, but many declined to address the most glaring issue: police use of force. Six years later, only about a third of states have passed laws on the question. The issue is at the heart of nationwide protests set off by the May 25 death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer in Minneapolis pressed a knee into Floyd's neck for seve -
MLS, RSL plan for return after players union ratifies collective bargaining agreement
Major League Soccer is back. But it took a circuitous and at times tenuous road to get there, and it was for a time in danger of not happening at all.The league and the MLS Players Association on Wednesday ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that runs through the 2025 season, includes salary and bonus cuts for players, and a return-to-play scenario that would take all 26 teams to Orlando for a tournament. While there are several significant provisions in what both parties agreed to, on -

Coronavirus messaging greatly impacts how people react, even splitting two Fox News audiences
Messaging matters.I’ve been thinking about that with regards to the success Japan has had with the coronavirus. You see, Japan just ended its state of emergency. That’s despite being dealt a bad early hand: that country has the world’s most densely populated city in Tokyo and the world’s oldest population, (Japan’s elderly population is nearly double that in the U.S.). It is relatively close to the site of the first outbreak in Wuhan, and one of the first major outb -

A Weber State University professor who made threatening comments on Twitter about those involved in the nationwide police protests said in an email Wednesday that he regrets the posts and will now resign.“I agree that my tweets were far beyond the realm of acceptable university policy as well as acceptable social norms,” wrote Scott Senjo in a message to The Salt Lake Tribune. “I made those tweets in the oftentimes vulgar, extreme back-and-forth that can occur on Twitter and th -

Letter: Where police knelt with protesters, there was no violence
There were several cities across America where police actually knelt with protesters and prayed with them. There was no violence or looting there.Let this be our national pattern before violent thugs can come in. Let this be our nation’s response to the protests that legitimately call our attention to racism and societal injustice. We don’t need Trump’s army. We need listening, sincerity and understanding.L. Letter: The definition of terrorism
Donald Trump said he wants to declare Antifa a domestic terrorist group. One definition of domestic terrorism is the “calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or ideological or religious in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear.”Is it not conceivable that Trump, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh could meet criteria for this definition?Roger Christensen, Salt Lake CitySubmit a l -
Elizabeth Bruenig: The last temptation of Trump
Late Monday afternoon, President Trump emerged from the White House and strode in the cool spring daylight to St. John’s Church in Lafayette Square. It was supposed to be an act of defiance: Mr. Trump has bristled at the observation that during the protests roiling the capital he has burrowed into a fortified bunker rather than addressing the nation.Like most performances arranged by Mr. Trump and associates, it made only a disjointed sort of sense. Yes, the president’s decision to m -
Utah’s all-male slate of candidates for governor support state wage gap survey
There’s likely a “major wage gap” between women and the men they work alongside at all levels of state government in the Beehive State, says Utah Valley University professor Susan Madsen, director of the Utah Women & Leadership Project.“We just don’t know how that looks exactly,” she said. That’s because efforts in the state Legislature to study the issue have fallen flat — most recently in 2018, when lawmakers shut down Democratic state Sen. Robert Gehrke: Coming to terms with Utah’s racial divide will take leaders brave enough to follow
It is a horrific act of sadistic callousness. It is also the latest in a disgracefully long list of black people, predominantly men, dying at the hands of police, those who are supposed to protect and serve. The incomprehensible killing of George Floyd prompted protests across the country — as it and other similar deaths, like the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, should. Some of those protests turned violent, as was the case Saturday in Salt Lake City, when protesters smashed win -
Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals starts bringing back furloughed staffers as preparation for NWSL tournament begins
The return of the National Women’s Soccer League also marked another return. But that one is more behind the scenes. With the NWSL Challenge Cup starting in Utah at the end of this month, games will be played at Zions Bank Stadium and Rio Tinto Stadium. Not only that, but housing accommodations, meals and more will need to be provided to all nine teams that will participate in the monthlong tournament. And because the Real Salt Lake organization, which includes the Utah Royals FC, is ostensi -
Letter: What do you mean, ‘allegedly’?
The caption for your photo of Brandon McCormick, the man who threatened protesters with a bow and arrow and was beaten up for it, reads: “Brandon McCormick was beaten up by protesters after allegedly brandishing a bow and arrow at a protest Saturday.”Both events were captured on video and confirmed by multiple witnesses, so how come one of them is stated as fact while the other only happened "allegedly"?I suspect the answer is that you're worried the semi-literate racist — obje -
Letter: The military should not be used this way
I am a veteran of The United States Navy and am 62 years old. I have witnessed many things in my life, but what I witnessed on television Monday night is beyond maddening. That the president of the United States would order U.S. troops to fire rubber bullets and teargas at unarmed peaceful protesters just so he can have a photo-op at the St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House. It is beyond the pale and the president should be ashamed, though I know he isn’t. America’s m -
Letter: Remove the reasons for violence
Our African-American co-citizens try and cry and protest and contest the never-ending onslaught of systemic white power over them, but to no avail. So, what should they do when the response so far has been so tepid? Just sit back and take it? You would never suggest to your friends or family that they should just accept abusive behavior toward them. Of course you wouldn't. You would tell them to stand up, be strong and fight back.So now, when they do just that, they are suddenly terrorists? This -

Letter: George Floyd was not insignificant
Watching the death of George Floyd is beyond difficult. You watch a man, helplessly handcuffed, plead for his life as that life is senselessly ended at the hands of American law enforcement officers. Those who were there knew it was wrong. Maybe some of the other officers had some idea this was not right. But they did not protect Floyd and he died anyway.I don’t think his killer probably intended to cause his death, but his apparent intent was equally pernicious.Floyd was face down and hand -
Letter: Don’t brush aside the people’s concerns
When the citizens of Salt Lake City took to the streets to mourn the deaths of George Floyd, Bernardo Palacios Carbajal and countless others, they were met with police in riot gear and a curfew. As protests against police brutality and systemic racism continue across the country, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall has issued another weeklong nightly curfew. Utah’s city and state leaders have been swift to dispatch police and the National Guard and impose curfews, but not to hear the conce -

Here are 6 ways Utah high schools are still holding graduations and celebrating seniors
Pomp and circumstance but with face masks and social distancing. That was the idea for high school graduations across the state this spring.Even with large events postponed and schools closed due to the coronavirus, many districts still wanted to give seniors a special sendoff. And the students wanted them, too, with many signing online petitions and pleading for some kind of in-person celebration after years of working toward a diploma. So while observing Utah’s safety guidelines, they came -

Protesters march again through Salt Lake City, as mayor and police chief meet with community leaders
Victoria Crosby stood with a megaphone in hand in front of hundreds of kneeling protesters. She urged them away from violence. She also wanted to achieve one small thing: She wanted law enforcement to take a knee with her, a small sign to show they heard her — and the crowd’s — pleas for equitable policing, for less brutality. But she didn’t have much hope of success with members of the National Guard. She’d been told they were ordered not to kneel."But that does not -
