In separating into geographic-distinct enclaves, into heartland and metropole, our factions have become steadily worse versions of themselves — deprived of the leaven of perspective, hardening into self-caricature, losing the democratic capacities that a more diverse and fluid political atmosphere can teach. The poisoning on the righ -

Commentary: Putting an asterisk next to the 2020 NBA champion is unavoidable, but is that a bad thing?
No matter who wins the 2020 NBA championship, it will come with an asterisk with all the league has endured this season. | Marcio Jose Sanchez, AP file photoSALT LAKE CITY — This NBA season will always have an asterisk next to it. Period.
It doesn’t matter if I think this year’s NBA champion is legitimate no matter how they get to their trophy, and it doesn’t matter if you agree with that. There are enough people who believe this season has been disrupted so much that th -

Spike Lee gives shout-out to Salt Lake City, finding hope in diversity of protesters nationwide
The protesters in Salt Lake City marching against police violence in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd have given New York filmmaker Spike Lee a ray of hope.“My young white sisters and brothers are out there in the streets. How many black folks are in Salt Lake City, Utah?,” Lee said in an interview Monday with The Associated Press.“And let’s take into account that the NBA is not playing. The Utah Jazz are not playing!,” laughed Lee, famously a New York Kni -
Businesses grateful for coronavirus aid, but worried about what comes next
The Paycheck Protection Program, the federal government’s ambitious effort to keep workers at small businesses off the unemployment rolls through the worst of the pandemic, has provided a financial safety net to more than 4 million companies. For many, the money was a lifeline. It let a trucking company keep paying drivers who would otherwise have been laid off and gave a group of therapists time to adjust to telemedicine and connect with new clients. But the pandemic’s devastation con -
Joe Biden castigates Trump, saying he is ‘consumed’ by ego, not leading during crisis
Philadelphia • Joe Biden on Tuesday blistered President Donald Trump a day after police drove back peaceful protesters near the White House so Trump could pose with a Bible before a damaged church. Biden said Trump’s “narcissism has become more important than the nation that he leads.”The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee delivered a speech at Philadelphia's City Hall, addressing the civil unrest across America following the death of George Floyd. Biden said "the -

Jennifer Senior: What Trump and toxic cops have in common
In his first Inaugural Address, and hopefully his last, Donald Trump talked about American carnage. He got it last week. What we couldn’t have known in January 2017 is that he wasn’t here to save us from this carnage, but to perpetuate it; that incitement wasn’t just a feature of his campaign, but of his governance. When historians look back at the Trump era, they may very well say his presidency was encapsulated by this moment, when a sadistic cop knelt on the neck of an Afric -
Paul Krugman: Trump takes us to the brink
Last fall Bob Kroll, the head of the Minneapolis police union, appeared at a Trump rally, where he thanked the president for ending Barack Obama’s “oppression of police” and letting cops “put the handcuffs on criminals instead of us.”The events of the past week, in which the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody led to demonstrations against police brutality, and these demonstrations were met by more police brutality — including unprecedented vio -
Gary Leimback: Take the reason for the protests seriously
On Saturday, Americans demonstrated their priorities. An amazing launch of the first manned rocket in years from Cape Canaveral comes in fourth place in terms of importance to Americans. The economic disaster created by the coronavirus competes with the virus itself for second place as Americans struggle with the conflict: Is our economy more important than our health? Intelligence tells us that our health is more important. But many people having been cooped up in quarantine for the last four to -

Letter: Trump shouts ‘Fire!’ in a theater
“When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”So said Donald Trump in a tweet about the Minneapolis street protests of police violence. How is this any different from shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater? The Supreme Court ruled long ago that our First Amendment right to freedom of speech is not unlimited. And a president's oath of office requires him to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."Why should Trump be treated any differently from the rest of -
Letter: There can’t be economic recovery while the pandemic continues
As the Utah Legislature revisits our state budget during an interim session in June and the U.S. Senate considers action on another stimulus bill, I would ask our Utah legislators and our U.S. congressional delegation to reflect on two basic questions.First, what are our values as a society? Second, what programs and spending will allow us to rebound the most quickly, once the pandemic is over? Please also note that control of the epidemic and economic health are two sides of one coin. Economic r -
Letter: The Lake Powell Pipeline will be a crippling investment
The Lake Powell Pipeline is going to be a crippling investment for our state. The $2.2 billion project is not only going to be financially taxing for Washington County residents, but for all Utahns. We are already paying for this unnecessary project through our sales tax. One-sixteenth of every cent goes into a fund specifically for water development. If you live in Utah or have ever visited Utah, you have already contributed to this project, whether you like it or not.The only repayment model th -

Letter: Applying different standards of justice
If a black man knelt on a white man’s throat for many minutes until he died, and his three buddies did nothing to stop him, all four would be arrested and charged with murder. We cannot have different standards of justice if we claim to be a nation of laws.Alan K. Gwendolyn Taylor Soper: Survivors of war found inner peace again
There’s a life changing fact I learned in therapy years ago: Two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time. Understanding this reduces anxiety.Case in point? It’s true that we’re angry at Officer Derek Chauvin — a name that sounds like a Victor Hugo novel character, but in fact he’s the apparent villain from our current real-life nightmare — and it’s true that we desperately hope for a better tomorrow. Those two truths are called a dialectic -
George Pyle: The four cops who lost the election
In 2004, Seymour Hersh did what Seymour Hersh does. He published an article revealing horrible misbehavior on the part of American soldiers, in this case the disgusting torture of inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.Serious-minded observers in and out of government instantly knew that the moral case for the U.S. invasion of that nation had been horribly, perhaps irrevocably, damaged. The military police officers who took photos of themselves torturing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners had so d -
Peaceful protesters march through Salt Lake City streets after mayor announces new one-week curfew
Demonstrators decrying systemic racism filled the square in front of Salt Lake City’s police headquarters with passionate and largely peaceful demands for change Monday — as nearby law enforcement barricades and armored vehicles served as vivid reminders of last weekend’s violence. The protesters who gathered by the hundreds held up their arms outside the public safety center, chanting, “Hands up. Don’t shoot.” They reasoned with officers decked in riot gear an -
New front opens in the fight over the Lake Powell pipeline
The water rights behind the proposed Lake Powell pipeline are not actually coming from the project’s namesake lake, but rather from the major reservoir upstream on the Green River. Now, Utah water officials’ new request to overhaul those rights has handed opponents a fresh opportunity to thwart the proposed pipeline just as federal officials are about to release a long-awaited environmental review of the $1.2 billion project, which would funnel 82,000 acre-feet of water from Lake Powe -
Utah’s Republican hopefuls for governor gang up on Spencer Cox and the Herbert administration
Three of the four Republican candidates for Utah governor criticized the state’s response to the coronavirus as overbroad on Monday and accused Gov. Gary Herbert of “politicizing” the public health crisis by appointing his chosen successor to head up the response. The jabs thrown during an hourlong debate put Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, who leads the state’s coronavirus task force and who a recent poll indicated is the current front-runner, on the defensive for much of the night -

Christopher Mead: Governor and mayor go too far to stifle free speech
Over the weekend, the national protests against police brutality have reached Salt Lake City. Saturday, an overwhelmingly peaceful demonstration attended by thousands turned violent, seemingly through the actions of a relatively small group of protestors. A police car was burned and messages painted on buildings throughout downtown. While figures as esteemed as Martin Luther King have recognized that “a riot is the language of the unheard,” I will not be addressing the legitimacy of t -
Peaceful protesters march to police headquarters as officers take a knee; SLC mayor announces new one-week curfew
Monday saw the end of a curfew in Salt Lake City, and the start of another one — that’s now the schedule to last for a week.Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall on Monday ordered the new curfew, running from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day — just an hour before hundreds of protesters gathered at City Hall. The protest so far has been peaceful, and at one moment, some officers even took a knee with protesters. In a statement, Mendenhall said the decision to extend the curfew to June 8
