• Black Bear Mountain in Inlet NY

Continuing the theme from our last adventure, Farah and I wanted more Adirondacks. This time we were not alone though, planning the weekend with our friends Alex and Katie. What started as a very ambitious plan for some fall camping, soon turned to the more reasonable plan of a nice autumn hike. It had been some time since I was on the top of Black Bear mountain in Inlet, and it was looking like the perfect day to ascend. Black » Read More »

  • Widespread Snow Hits Lake Tahoe and Mammoth

It’s starting to look more like ski season in Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra.Ullr paid a visit to several California ski areas last night, and while snow totals weren’t too significant, it’s a sure sign that winter is on its way.Mammoth Mountain picked up the most snow, with 2″ falling over the last 24 hours. • The Ski Season That Refuses To End: Unprecedented Snow Keeps Falling at Valle Nevado, Chile

Chile’s ski season is notoriously short, but a little thing called “super El Niño” brewing in the Pacific Ocean had other plans this year.
Valle Nevado, one of the most popular ski resorts in the Southern Hemisphere, has extended its season through November 8, 2026, the latest closing date in its history, and snow continues to fall despite winter transitioning into spring, a typical death knell for the southern ski season.

  • Valerie Festavan Talks Highs, Lows, and Her New Ski Movie: "Barbwire Heart"

Either as a joke or a played-out stock phrase, the term “multi-sport athlete” gets thrown around a lot. In Valerie Festavan’s case, though, it’s just accurate.
The 25-year-old action-sports polyglot is known among skiers for her stylish skiing, but she also skateboards, snowboards, mountain bikes, and rides dirt bikes. Sometimes, she does them the same day on the same mountain: at the past two Silver Belt competitions, she entered as a skier and snowboarder.

  • Review: 2027 Dynafit Radical Pro Boot

To me, the most important feature of how a backcountry boot performs is how it skis. After all, why else am I walking up all these mountains in the winter? There’s not much of a point in taking a boot all the way up a skintrack if the way back down is going to suck. Sure, walking is fun, but skiability rules all. That being said, there are many schools of thought on how a touring boot should achieve good skiability. For Dynafit, it’s all about the walk mode mechanism. Thanks to a long
  • Raide Drops HUGE 2027 Product Updates

In the last few years, there’s undeniably been a “cool” brand for backcountry skiers. And no, it’s not a ski, binding, or boot brand, it’s a maker of really well-designed backpacks and apparel. Raide, and the man behind the show Kyle Siegel, have really left a mark on the industry with intentional design and extremely high quality (and highly coveted) items that many other brands might consider an afterthought in their product portfolios. Last winter, as Daniel Harper worked on his first full-fledged ski movie, he got the call: a big storm was headed to Lake Tahoe. There was a problem, though. • Nearing 60, This Skier and Filmmaker Still Drops Cliffs. Here's Why.

Scott Gaffney knows it’s a little odd—and maybe even comical?—for a guy in his late 50s to be putting out ski edits. To our benefit, though, that isn’t stopping him. He dropped his latest video earlier this week, chronicling the truly weird Western ski season and suggesting that age is more of a loose guideline than a number.
To make the edit, the former Matchstick Productions director, longtime Tahoe local, and 57-year-old skier slapped a GoPro on his head and went to to
