Jacob Wilson Likely Done For Season
The Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson is headed back to the injured list and is probably done for the year, reports Martín Gallegos of MLB.com. Wilson has been dealing with left shoulder issues this year and is headed to Sacramento to see a doctor. No move was announced before this afternoon’s game in Kansas City, so it appears the A’s are playing short-handed. They start a series in Houston tomorrow and should add someone else to the roster in Wilson’s place before then.

What Are The Next Steps For The A’s?
The A’s stand alone at the bottom of the MLB standings after Wednesday’s loss to Kansas City (combined with an Angels win over Houston). Their 49-77 showing has them on a 63-win pace. Given their injuries and how poorly they’ve played over the last two months, there’s a decent chance they won’t even get to 60 wins. This will probably be their third 100-loss season in the last five years.
Even if the A’s didn’t expect a playoff berth, they clearly didn&rs

Tyler Soderstrom To Undergo Hip Surgery
The A’s are ruling Tyler Soderstrom out for the season. Manager Mark Kotsay told reporters that the outfielder will undergo left hip surgery on Friday (link via Robert Falkoff of MLB.com).
Soderstrom has battled a hip impingement dating back to late June. He had a minimal IL stay, came back for five weeks, then was shut back down over the weekend. The surgery will hopefully address the issue for good and allow Soderstrom to enter next season at full health. Playing through the discomf

A’s Place Tyler Soderstrom On 10-Day IL Due To Hip Impingement
Prior to today’s game with the Rangers, the Athletics announced that Tyler Soderstrom has been placed (retroactive to August 15) on the 10-day injured list due to a left hip impingement.  Infielder Darell Hernaiz was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move.
This is now the second time in the last two months that Soderstrom has been sidelined by this same hip injury, as his previous IL stint on June 28 kept the left fielder out of action for just the minimum 10 days.  A&

The A’s announced this afternoon that they’ve claimed left-hander Joe Rock off waivers from the White Sox. They quickly optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. To clear a 40-man roster spot for Rock, the team transferred right-hander Justin Sterner to the 60-day injured list.

Luis Severino Likely Out For Rest Of Season
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay provided an unfortunate update on injured right-hander Luis Severino yesterday. Kotsay told reporters, including Martín Gallegos of MLB.com, that he doesn’t expect Severino to pitch again this season, as there is not enough time in his throwing program to fully build up.
Severino hit the 15-day injured list at the end of May with a strain of his shoulder capsule and subscapularis muscle. That pointed toward a long-term absence, and he was unsurprisingly

    Justin Sterner Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
The Athletics announced that right-hander Justin Sterner has undergone right knee surgery, specifically a chondroplasty of the medial femoral condyle. Sterner will start his rehabilitation work but won’t return during the remainder of the 2026 season. He is already on the 15-day injured list but will be transferred to the 60-day IL whenever the A’s need his roster spot.
Sterner, now 29, was claimed off waivers from the Rays in November of 2024. He was a solid bullpen option for the A

Top Prospects To Watch At Rookie Cutoff
Since the implementation of the 2022 collective bargaining agreement, the middle of August has been a common time for top prospects to make their debuts. That CBA introduced the Prospect Promotion Incentive, which can provide teams an extra draft pick if they carry a rookie-eligible top prospect on their MLB roster for an entire season and the player fares well in award voting (i.e. wins Rookie of the Year or finishes top three in Cy Young or MVP balloting within their first three seasons). The A’s sent infielder Jonathan Ornelas outright to Triple-A Las Vegas, according to the MLB.com transaction tracker. This is his second career outright, which gives him the right to elect free agency.
Ornelas was designated for assignment on Monday when Zack Gelof came back from a knee laceration.  He had only been selected onto the big league roster a couple weeks earlier. Ornelas drew four starts in six appearances, three at second base and one in left field. He stepped t

Nick Kurtz Appears Unlikely To Return This Season
There’s a good chance that Nick Kurtz’s season is over. A’s manager Mark Kotsay tells Martín Gallegos of MLB.com that the first baseman’s right thumb will be immobilized throughout August after he received a platelet-rich plasma injection last week.
“Four weeks of no mobility. You probably can do the timeline and think through the scenarios in front of us for Nick,” Kotsay acknowledged. Kurtz has battled thumb pain since at least the middle of

There are plenty of obvious trade candidates who we’ve discussed for weeks at MLBTR (e.g. Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, Antonio Senzatela). Most of them are within a year or two of free agency.
